Ian Gittins

Ian Gittins – Ghostwriter

I am an accomplished ghostwriter who has co-written a number of Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling memoirs.

Overview

In my 20-year ghost-writing career, I have co-written memoirs with authors as various as Nikki Sixx, Sir Billy Connolly, Sir Cliff Richard, Petula Clark, Rob Halford (Judas Priest), John Bishop, Shane Filan, David Essex and Jimmy Tarbuck. I've also worked with many less well-known figures, including a veteran Irish radio DJ, a reformed armed robber, the founder of one of Britain's most iconic record companies, and a Manchester gym owner who dedicates his life to training and motivating disabled young people.

I work closely with the books' authors, getting to know them and spending many hours talking to them. When I start writing, I constantly show them my work-in-progress, sending them each chapter when it is finished to get their thoughts and feedback and agree any changes they may want. I invariably find this relaxed collaborative process to be productive, rewarding ... and fun.

In total, the books I have written or co-written to date have sold more than a million copies. If someone has a great story, I love helping them to tell it.

Work experience

Self-employed

Oct, 2004 — Present
I used to be a freelance magazine journalist but have been a ghost-writer since I was summoned to Los Angeles in 2004 to co-write a drug-addled memoir with Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue, and saw it take root in the New York Times bestseller list for months. I've since co-written with musicians, comedians, TV presenters, chefs, farmers, ex-criminals and personal trainers. It's a line of work that suits me down to the ground and I absolutely love it.

Carlton Books

Mar, 2001 — Jan, 2004 (almost 3 years)
I identified, commissioned and edited books for this independent publisher, including official biographies of Kirsty McColl and Suede, U2's compendium of their long-running fan-club magazine, and a truly wonderful book about journeying around Ireland in hot pursuit of the perfect pub jam session.

Virgin Publishing

Sep, 1997 — Oct, 2000 (about 3 years)
As a commissioning editor in a publishing house, I commissioned and edited autobiographies, or official biographies, of Meat Loaf, Aerosmith, Ike Turner, Eddie Izzard, Blur, Billy Bragg, James, Bush, Shaun Ryder, the Charlatans and Creation Records, among others.
