Gabrielle Chant

Gabrielle Chant – Editor

Experienced copyeditor and proofreader of literary and commerical fiction. My portfolio includes a winner of the Costa First Novel Award.

Overview

I am an experienced copyeditor and proofreader with a gimlet eye for detail and a passion for a well-told story.

I work sensitively with each author’s individual style, preserving their unique voice, while ensuring that their story is told in the most effective way possible. I am respectful when delivering my edits, including clear explanations of each amendment, query or suggestion I make.

I check facts, timelines, plot coherence, style and character consistency; I verify spellings, including brand names and instances of foreign language; I line edit for sentence structure, punctuation, tense, repetitions and clarity.

I began my editing career working in-house at prizewinning indie publisher Tindal Street Press, where I copyedited the Costa First Novel Award winner, 'Beauty' by Raphael Selbourne. Since then, I have worked as a freelance copyeditor on bestselling titles such as 'The Girl in the Ice' by Robert Bryndza and 'After the Lie' by Kerry Fisher, which have each sold over a million copies.

I am experienced in literary and commercial fiction, including historical fiction, psychological thrillers, crime, young adult and contemporary women’s fiction – do take a look at my portfolio below. I am also more than happy to work with children’s fiction.

'Gabrielle is a delight to work with. Friendly, efficient and personable, but also a brilliant copyeditor who I can absolutely trust to approach a manuscript with both precision and sensitivity. Gabrielle is THOROUGH. She picked up on things that my first editor and my beta readers all missed, and gave me tons of helpful feedback throughout my manuscript. She's an experienced professional, and I feel privileged to have had her help with my story. What's more, she's a lovely person, very easy to work with, and gently cushioned my fragile writer's ego. I will definitely use her again fo...
