Laura Franks

Laura Franks – Editor

Got a sticky plot hole? Misbehaving characters? An old-fashioned case of 'how do I make this better'? Let's figure it out together!

Overview

Hi there! My name is Laura. My passion and talents for story-telling of all types led me into the editorial team at Simon & Schuster Australia, where I currently work full time.

As an editor at S&S AU, I manage and edit multiple titles while leading our authors through the editorial process from start to finish. I also regularly undertake manuscript assessments on both potential acquisitions and upcoming titles.

My current services:

*Editorial/manuscript assessments*

What this includes: I read your manuscript and write a 1-3 page report focusing on how you might improve the manuscript.

This is right for you if: You feel like your plot needs work but you aren't sure where to start, you've been working on the manuscript for a while and need a fresh pair of professional eyes, or you want some big picture feedback but can't necessarily afford a more in-depth edit.

This is wrong for you if: You need someone to provide structural feedback on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis (structural edit), to edit your prose (copyedit) or check for typos/grammatical and spelling mistakes (proofread).

Fee: Starting fee of AUD$550 for all works up to 60,000 words, then $50 per extra 10000 words. (i.e., an 80k manuscript = AUD$650, 100k = $750)

*[PLEASE NOTE: On Reedsy I am offering my services as an independent editorial freelancer. Hiring me does not equate to publication with S&S AU.]*

Work experience

Affirm Press

Jun, 2022 — Present
As an editor with Affirm Press, my editorial duties include manuscript/editorial assessment, structural editing and the occasional book doctoring, copyedit or proofread. I also manage Affirm's unsolicited submissions, so I've got a good eye for the market. My job also involves a lot of project management, which includes simultaneously managing multiple people across the life cycle of multiple titles at a time from start to finish - which means I work fast and efficiently while maintaining a high level of output. But my real talents lie most strongly in assessment and structural work, which is exactly what it sounds like - assessing the overall structure of a manuscript, then figuring out how which parts are working and which need a little more development. It's my favourite part of the job, and I can't wait to bring my skills and passion to your manuscript!
