Flannery Wise

Flannery Wise – Editor

Experienced editor and proofreader with expertise in trade and academic publishing specializing in historical fiction and the humanities

Overview

I have always been passionate about helping writers find the best words to express their ideas. In my 5 years in the publishing industry, I have worked with both trade and academic authors from pitch to publication to bring their books into being. While at BHC Press, I assessed, edited, and proofread full-length fiction manuscripts. As an Editorial Associate at the University of Michigan Press specializing in the humanities, I assessed and reviewed proposals, created cover copy, and strengthened projects. The opportunity to work directly with clients as a freelancer with Cambridge Proofreading has helped me develop the ability to give constructive feedback that is both effective and specific to the individual's needs.

In fiction, I specialize in historical fiction and YA fantasy. In non-fiction projects, I'm passionate about all forms of entertainment, and I have extensive experience in the humanities and social sciences, primarily in film, history, music, fashion, and politics. When editing, I focus on preserving the author's vision and voice while helping them make their work the best it can be. I'm a deadline-driven, detail-obsessed, self-described book nerd who loves to be immersed in different subjects and perspectives, and I want to use my experience to continue bringing new, exciting books to the shelves.

Flannery was extremely professional. She set expectations for both timing and nature of responses very precisely. Her analysis of phrasing, plot and character development were insightful and very conscious of my vision for the novel (we began with no input from me, just the manuscript, then jux...

Flannery took on a big job. I’m not the most meticulous writer. She worked within the bounds I set and finished in a timely manner. I am more than pleased with the work. My novel has been polished and ready for the next steps. Before she finished the agreed upon work, I asked her for additional ...

Flannery provided a very thorough and complete edit of my manuscript and I would recommend her to anyone. Timelines and progress were strongly communicated, which was a big help as this was my first book and experience with Reedsy.
