Emma Plater

Emma Plater – Editor

I am an editor who has published bestselling women's fiction, crime and historical fiction as well as non-fiction (particularly cookery).

Overview

I have edited and published books for both large and small publishers. At Penguin Random House, where I was Danielle Steel's UK editor, I was responsible for publishing mass market commercial fiction (mainly in the areas of women’s fiction, historical fiction, crime and saga). I have also published complex non-fiction (including cookery, travel and illustrated reference guides) for Foulsham and several cookery titles for Thermomix. I work across both the fiction and non-fiction lists at Michael Joseph.

My background as an in-house editor means that I am able to help you with any stage of the publication process, whether it is getting your manuscript ready for submission or publication, or that final copyedit and proofread.
I look forward to hearing from you to discuss how we can work together.

Work experience

Penguin Random House

Aug, 2007 — Apr, 2014 (over 6 years)

I joined Transworld as a desk editor but soon started acquiring my own titles. I had the privilege of commissioning across several genres, including women’s fiction, crime, historical crime and saga. During my time there, several books that I published were Sunday Times and/or Kindle bestsellers.

Authors I published include Danielle Steel, Ariana Franklin, Victoria Lamb, Liza Marklund, Val Wood, Marcia Willett, Catherine Ryan Hyde, David Levien, Mary Jane Staples, Andrew Swanston, Stephanie Butland and Tom Cain. I was also involved in the editing process for the novels of SJ Bolton and Belinda Bauer.

I also held direct responsibility for Transworld’s Film & TV tie-in program. I worked on the tie-in campaigns for Captain Phillips and Jack Reacher: One Shot, both of which were Sunday Times bestsellers.

Penguin Random House

Jul, 2018 — Present

I work across both the fiction (women's fiction, historical and crime) and non-fiction (health, cookery, autobiography and memoir) lists at the moment,

Vorwerk UK Ltd (Thermomix)

Apr, 2014 — Feb, 2018 (almost 4 years)

I was responsible for overseeing all recipe products for the Thermomix appliance within the UK, including cookbooks, magazines, newsletters and online recipe platform. I also wrote several cookery books for Thermomix.
I continued to work as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader for several publishing houses during this time.

Foulsham Publishing

Aug, 2006 — Aug, 2007 (about 1 year)

At this reference and non-fiction publishing house, I managed the editorial process on every title as well as writing sales and marketing material. I also managed, edited and proofread a number of complex individual book projects including several cookery titles, The Real Ale Pub Guide and a series of illustrated reference guides published with You & Your Wedding and Prima Baby magazines.

At the moment, I am quite pleased with the suggestions that Emma has given me. She has opened the door to questions, in the event that I need clarification. I am thrilled by the challenges that she has placed before me for I am confident that it will make my storytelling better. When I am interacting with someone, on any scale, I expect the same communication in return. I am pleased with her in...

Inviting Emma to work on my first novel has proven invaluable. Emma has a great eye for salient elements that can disturb the reader. She points out jarring reactions of characters and offer great advice on smoothing it out. Her way of working, offering an overall review of the novel in addition to line edit in the text itself is a great help to identify ways of correcting or polishing the nov...
