Children's Book Illustrator

Self-employed
January, 2012 – Present (about 10 years)

Emma Latham is a freelance children’s book illustrator, with over twelve years of experience within the book publishing industry.

Emma used to dream of becoming an artist or astronaut; although she’s settled on the former, and has never been into space, her head is still very much in the clouds. Fueled by gallons of tea and cute dog photos from the internet, she carefully crafts illustrations depicting all the magical adventures she wishes she could have.

Her style consists of textures and found objects which are jiggled and pieced together to create atmospheric and enticing imagery. She has two main styles; the first is collage based and is tailored specifically towards the children’s book market. The characters that live within the pages of these stories are often deeply influenced by people, animals and childhood memories. The second is 3D collage where extreme light and dark are used to convey layers of themes and messages.

Clients and Publications
As a children’s book illustrator her clients include; Collins Big Cat (Harper Collins), Franklin Watts (Hachette), Black Rose Writing, FLTRP, The Canine Chronicle, Simpsons Special Care Babies and The World Medical Fund.

Awards and Exhibitions
Her work has been shown at the Elephant and Castle Gallery and La Base Paris. Also, she has been featured in the Association Of Illustrator’s Best In Contemporary Illustration publication for years 2010 and 2012.

She lives in Nottingham with her room mates; Harry the spider (the 12th) who always hogs the bath and never pays the bills, Lex who is basically a cuddly panther trapped inside the body of a house cat, and Koji who has won the stinkiest cat in the world award for 5 years straight… oh and her partner in crime/muse/mad scientist/musician/chief tea maker and fiancée who probably hasn’t seen the surface of his desk in over a decade.
