Emma Gibbs

Emma Gibbs – Editor

A highly experienced, professional editor with over 14 years working for major publishers. I can make your text sparkle!

Overview

I'm a freelance editor, writer and proofreader, and a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).

I work across fiction and non-fiction, though I specialise in travel: I'm editor-in-chief of the award-winning JRNY Travel Magazine, work as a freelance editorial project manager for Bradt Travel Guides, and have written a number of books for Collins Reference (including a new guide to the North Coast 500).

I've been working in publishing for over 14 years now, during which time I've worked for the major UK travel publishers: DK Travel Guides, Rough Guides (at the time part of Penguin Random House), Lonely Planet and Bradt Travel Guides. This means I've edited everything from big-name destinations (Great Britain; New York City; India) and up-and-coming places (Colombia; Nepal; Taiwan) to those that are still almost totally off the mainstream radar (Timor-Leste; Rwanda; Kazakhstan), plus full-colour, illustrated guides (Where to Go When; Make the Most of Your Time on Earth).

I've worked on first editions, one-off books, and guides that were into their umpteenth edition, with old-hand authors and excited new writers. My in-house experience means that I have experience in working with books at every stage of the publishing process – from the original ideas and drafting of chapters and synopsis, through research and writing, to editing, proofreading and checking plotters; not to mention photo and image selection, and marketing.

As a writer myself, I understand how daunting the editorial process can be – so let me help you through it. Whether you just want a fresh pair of eyes, an in-depth edit, or that final proofread, I can help your text sparkle.

This is my second time working with Emma and I will continue to engage with her services in the future. She is very clear about her availability, is a fantastic communicator, and a pleasure to work with. My first book was on Kentucky and she handled American English beautifully. This book was an American's perspective on the Irish whiskey industry and her knowledge of the island make her the ...

A Testimony Emma G. took on the project of proofreading my 85,450-word novel with alacrity. She approached quirky stylistic elements, French proper names, and short conversational passages in French, Spanish, and Catalan with a critical, yet compassionate eye. Emma proofed and edited all twenty-three chapters with insight, holding up high standards of grammar, punctuation, and style. Cha...

Working with Emma has been a great experience. She’s helped me along the process, has changed adapted her services when I didn’t know what I needed. Guided and cajoled me into getting a half-decent draft. I’ve learned a huge amount and couldn’t recommend her highly enough.
