Devon Lord

Devon Lord – Editor

Editor with 12 years' experience in academic and general audience nonfiction for all ages, as well as fiction, picture books, and memoirs.

Overview

I'm a history nerd that fell into editing. I worked as an editor for a textbook publishing company from 2013 to 2019, and then I moved on to a university press, where I edit academic nonfiction as well as thrillers, historical fiction, children's books, and personal memoirs. I am passionate about helping people communicate their stories, whether it's the history of Texas vaqueros or a romantic comedy set on Mars.

I believe an editor should be a writer's partner, not a dictator. My job is to help you make your book the best it can be. So, while I'll make suggestions based on the style guide of your choice (my preferred style is Chicago, though I've also worked with AP), the most important thing is consistency. My first read-through will look at the big picture: does the work progress in a logical, clear way? Do the arguments/dialogue/character development make sense? Then, once we've worked together to address those questions, I'll perform a more detailed line edit for flow and grammatical correctness. One last proofread after that, and we're off to the races!

Sep, 2019 — Present
I am currently the editor in chief for a southern university press. We specialize in southern history and culture, but we also have a number of award-winning fiction and poetry collections, as well as children's picture books. I handle all aspects of the editorial process for each manuscript, including developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading.

In additional to my day job, I have worked as a freelance editor for varied organizations, including a public school district in Indiana and an architectural research firm. In this role, I have ghost-written content, provided developmental edits and research, as well as copyedited and proofread material according to AP Style and Chicago Manual.
