25+ years in publishing. Award-winning editor on leading UK photography magazines and bookazines. Author of several books on photography.
Overview
Vast experience in photography publishing since 1995. I’ve worked most of my career as an editor, launched highly-successful and award-winning magazines and established and ran my own publishing business. I've also written and edited books on photography, created and edited over 50 bookazines and produced guides and supplements for market-leading brands including Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and Samsung. While my career has focused on photography (pun intended), I'm experienced covering a wide range of subjects from technology to historic aircraft.
I’m reliable, deadline-focused and as adept with ideas/concept generation and research as I am with writing, proof-reading and editing. I'm good with fine detail and can provide a gentle edit to retain style or cut back heavily to meet a word count.
I've a friendly and helpful approach to work, so if you need a trustworthy remote freelancer get in touch!

Over the last year I've covered everything from editing books for GMC Publications to writing articles on historic aviation for Key Publishing's FlyPast magazine. I have a home office set-up with full-fibre broadband and have worked remotely for six years, so can offer my services to any UK or overseas clients.
Halo Publishing/Dennis Publishing/Raspberry Pi Press
Mar, 2006 —
Jan, 2021
(almost 15 years)
I set up Halo Publishing with a colleague and in late 2006 launched Digital SLR Photography, which proved a major success in terms of readership and advertising, turning a profit in its first year with a turnover well over a million pounds and a first ABC of 23,000.
In 2008, Halo was acquired by Dennis Publishing and working closely with the marketing, subscription and newstrade teams, Digital SLR Photography became the UK’s fastest-growing photography magazine in 2009, with an annual ABC increase of 27%, and was awarded Consumer Magazine of the Year at the Pixel Trade Awards. In 2010, it was shortlisted for PPA magazine of the year and in 2011 reached number two in the photo magazine market (ABC: 35,501).
Along with the usual duties associated with being an editor, I was heavily involved with running the business, as well as brand promotion and extension, subscription and newstrade strategy, commercial and marketing projects and creating a strong social media presence (600,000 followers on Facebook). Following acquisition by Dennis Publishing, I was tasked with creating 'Magbooks' (bookazines) and produced over 50 in ten years. The title was produced from home from 2016, sold by Dennis Publishing to Raspberry Pi Press in 2018 and closed in 2021.

(about 5 years)
In May 2001, I launched Photography Monthly magazine with Archant Specialist. In 2003 and 2005, it was awarded Archant Magazine of the Year. In 2005, following a joint editorial, marketing and subscription strategy, Photography Monthly became the first-ever (and only) photography title to become the UK’s fastest-growing magazine in ANY magazine sector, boasting an ABC of 38,847.
