Copy editor and proofreader. I work on genre fiction and comics, with experience at Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins. I live to read.
Overview
As a freelance editor, I’ve spent the last 20 years working directly with both major international publishers and smaller independent houses. Whether problem-solving, building and maintaining author relationships or keeping projects on schedule, I’m dependable, organised and a passionate advocate for the books I work on. Motivated, meticulous and always eager to develop my skills, I aim to be a collaborative and effective part of the publishing process, whatever the genre or medium.

Working on crime, sci-fi, romance and contemporary fiction, I edit manuscripts to house style while retaining the author’s voice. Alongside checking that grammar and spelling are of the highest standard, I also provide practical, constructive fixes for any narrative inconsistencies that I discover.

I’ve copy edited over 140 comics for the Europe Comics initiative, a collective digital imprint translating previously published French comics into US English. Working with project editors and translators, I ensure that translations retain the tone and style of the original books, while localising the text and sound effects for an English-speaking audience.

Copy edited and proofread several graphic novels for a large international audience, often working on (sometimes fictionalised) autobiographical material, which at times required me to discuss and sensitively edit difficult real-life stories while working to tight publishing deadlines. Titles of this type included Malik Sajad’s Munnu: A Boy from Kashmir.

I’ve worked on 15 books for this small independent, most of which have been for their children’s imprint Flying Eye Books. This has allowed me to develop my skill set to include editing for a young audience, placing greater importance on appropriate word and tone choices. Highlights include editing William Grill’s Shackleton’s Journey, which went on to win the 2015 CILIP Kate Greenaway Award for illustration in children’s books.

I’ve worked on more than 100 graphic novels for this independent publisher, in genres including contemporary fiction, biography, memoir, horror, sci-fi, YA, literary adaptation, art and politics. This has included: guiding authors and artists through the structuring and development of their script over multiple drafts; providing feedback on plot, character and dialogue as required; checking rough, layout and final artwork; proofing the completed book; writing author biographies and blurbs; and giving editorial sign-off ahead of printing.
