Ben Baker

Ben Baker – Designer

Artist who loves playful, handcrafted illustration that tells a story. Interested in nature, technology, sociology, sci-fi.

Overview

I’m a professional artist and illustrator with extensive experience in book, poster, online illustration and 2d animation. I have a love of nature, science, sci-fi, and the weird and wonderful and like to represent it with playful, narrative, detailed illustration. I mix digital and analogue techniques with a handmade style which emphasises textures, colours and atmospheric light.

I create original artwork that's tailor made for an author so I want to be sure we communicate well and can clearly define the scope of a project at the start. This way we can both feel confident about achieving the best result and I can focus on doing my best work.

I like to start with sketches that we can discuss and I can adjust after feedback. From these I make mock-ups which form the basis of the final illustration. After further discussion I make the final version and deliverables. I like to work with both analogue and digital media which gives me the most freedom in expression, and ease in making adjustments. I also work with 2d animation that can bring an illustration to life if you need additional assets for a website and SoMe.

I've created illustrations for middle-grade readers and up, collaborating with authors, publishers, councils, and cultural organizations. My work has been featured in exhibitions and art/illustration festivals both in Sweden and internationally.

I'm always interested in new assignments so please get in touch!

Ben was a pleasure to work with. He was professional, prompt, responsive to edits, delivered on time, and most importantly his work is exceptional. I'd give him 5 stars for value, but the Dutch side of me is a little cheap. I have to remind myself that you often get what you pay for, and I fee...

How do you collaborate with authors to ensure your illustrations align with their vision?

It's important to remember that every author is different. Even if an author has worked on their book for months, if not years, and has a deep understanding of places, characters and content, it doesn't always mean they know how it should look. Other times the author knows exactly what they want....

What do you include in your offers to clients?

If I am making an offer to a client it's because I am genuinely interested in their project. Therefore I try to show that by talking about the things in their project that I like, relate to and that inspire me. I will try to lift examples from previous work and/or experiences that I think are rel...
