Overview
I love working with authors to bring out the very best in their work. I'm friendly, flexible and versatile, and will work with you in the way that best suits you and your writing. Structural edits, line edits, copy-edits, proofreads - I'm experienced in each of these, and in understanding what level of editing a book requires.
Perhaps you need a detailed structural edit, focusing on plot, characterisation and pacing? In that case, a development edit will dive deeply into what's working and what's not, and, crucially, show you how to fix what's not. Or perhaps you just want a pair of experienced eyes to read your book and provide top-level feedback? Then an editorial assessment will guide you in reshaping your novel with key suggestions. Maybe you've got the shape and structure of your book sorted, but feel that the writing isn't as sharp as it could be? A line edit will get each sentence singing.
In my nine years at Transworld, Random House, I learnt how to recognise, develop and hone a great story. I worked with both big-brand authors and first-time writers, and enjoyed helping authors take their manuscripts to the next level with broad-brushstroke feedback on plot and characterisation and sharp copy-editorial skills. As a freelance editor, I've worked with publishers including Picador, Mantle, And Other Stories, Little, Brown and Puffin. I've specialised in copy-editing fast-paced, plot-driven crime thrillers, narrative non-fiction, middle-grade fiction and literary and translated fiction. With a first-class degree in Modern Languages from Oxford, I particularly love working on translated fiction, but enjoy turning my hand to all manner of projects, fiction and non-fiction.
Feel free to get in touch to discuss your work and how I can help.
