Melissa Baumgart

Melissa Baumgart – Editor

Caring & detail-oriented editor interested in character-driven young adult, middle grade, & romance. I will help your stories come to life!

Overview

I am an editor and writing instructor with over 10 years of experience, who has helped numerous now-published authors move from concept to polished manuscript. I've taught writing to a wide variety of age groups, and have academic interests in history, literature, and television/film. I've also worked in television and film, which gives me a strong grasp on story and character. I love books that straddle the women's fiction/romance line - chick lit, or what one might call a "growmance," where the heroine's journey of self-discovery includes romance but is not necessarily dominated by it.

I enjoy working with both new and experienced writers to get their novels into the best shape possible. I will bring my enthusiasm, eye for detail, and encouragement to your work! I love digging in deep on character motivation and making stories feel authentic and unique so that the ending feels earned. I'm also an author myself, so I understand the struggle, which informs my empathy and solidarity with you as an artist. I provide kind feedback to encourage and guide you to the strongest possible expression of the story you want to tell.

My choice of Melissa for my Developmental Editor could not have been more perfect for my debut novel! I am so impressed by her ability to understand the concept of the story but to also "hear" my voice and then apply what she understands to the editing. I am totally in line with her suggestions a...
