This is my first book and first time working with an Editor, so did not know what to expect and I have no experience to compare to. Barbara was pleasant and responsive to work with. For the most part, I was pleased with her communication and the work she did. I knew going in that punctuation cons...

Barbara did a tremendous job preserving the story. She was able to correct grammar and punctuation without making me feel like I should know better than to have made those mistakes in the first place. She challenged me by asking questions, rather than taking her point of view and writing it into ...

What are the most common mistakes authors make in their query letters, and how can they improve them?

Common mistakes in query letters: Not saying what your book is about and why your target audience will love it. Remaining a secret writer by not sharing who you are, your background, and your writing experience. Giving away too much of the story: Mr. A hates Mr. B and winds up killing him. Ma...

How does personalizing a query letter improve request rates, and what should be tailored?

It’s like junk mail vs. "real" mail. When I get an envelope with an advertiser's name, I usually toss it aside, thinking I don't need a new garage floor or whatever they're selling. But when I get mail addressed to me personally from a real person, I'm much more likely to want to know what they h...
