Ariell Cacciola

Ariell Cacciola – Editor

Editorial director with 15+ years' experience across most genres. Specialising in horror, mystery, crime, fantasy, historical, contemporary.

Overview

I'm the publisher and editorial director of Wild Hunt Books, an exciting publishing house in South London. With more than fifteen years in different roles in the publishing and literary world, I understand it can be very personal and difficult to let another person read your work. I am happy to work with you on your standalone manuscript or am more than ready to help you whip that series into shape. I like to work collaboratively with authors so I'm keen to hear what worries you have and your future ideas for refining your book.

As an editor, I regularly work across genres in either adult or young adult (YA) fiction, but I have added specialities in literary fiction, contemporary fiction, historical fiction, horror, magical realism, fantasy, thriller and mystery/crime/suspense. I love strong voices, unique characters, plot twists and unusual settings or when a writer takes the expected and completely turns that on its head.

My editorial approach evaluates your entire or partial draft, considering your manuscript’s structure, plot, narrative, pacing, character development, dialogue and writing quality. This is an extensive look at your complete book. Is the manuscript working from beginning to end? My services are for writers prepared to revise and polish their manuscripts with actionable feedback.

For query letter reviews, as an editor I receive author and agent pitches on a daily basis. I know what hooks a reader and will also help you align your letter to industry standards. As an acquisitions editor, I'm know market trends and would love to work with you on honing your query.

Additionally for writers working within a budget, I provide detailed reader's reports.

Ariell was great to work with. Not only did she answer all of my questions, she was able to put into words many of the problems with my draft that I was unable to put my finger on. She provided me with resources to help me better structure the novel, and gave suggestions on to how to start going ...

Is there a viable market for novellas written by debut authors, and what factors contribute to their success?

Novellas are extremely hard to place with the traditional Big 5 publishers. Debuts, in general, are also becoming hard to place with such a competitive market. However, there is still a hungry market for them. Self-published authors frequently publish novellas and readers love them! Independent p...

How does personalizing a query letter improve request rates, and what should be tailored?

I'm more concerned with whether your query letter hooks me: I want your title, genre, word count and comp titles at the front. I am even curious to know why you are the exact person to write this book (e.g., 'I'm an arctic research scientist so I set my locked room mystery in a research base', et...

What are the most common mistakes authors make in their query letters, and how can they improve them?

I like seeing the title, genre and comp titles at the top. Often, writers hide this info in the final paragraph. I want to know immediately what this book is and what it's about, along with where it could sit in the market. It quickly tells me if this book is for me and if the author even knows w...
