Overview
When I was attending grad school for comics in a tiny Vermont town, I somehow also found an amazing nonfiction publisher just a few blocks away. And with this stroke of luck, I began an extensive career working in nonfiction and comics. I love nature- and food-focused books, be it a how-to about raising chickens or narrative fiction about overcoming addiction through birding. I always want to work on books focused on showcasing the amazing animals, processes, and places of the world. I have worked with many cartoonists to hone their nonfiction comics via Awesome 'Possum, a comic anthology with four volumes.
When we work together, I want you to fall in love with your book again. I am a very straight-forward editor. In a copy edit of the manuscript or proofread of pages, I will maintain and update a style guide to ensure consistency. I have styled many (oh, so many) end notes, mostly based on Chicago Manual of Style but also AP or even the author's own concoction. While editing, I will sometimes respond with little tales that your book reminded me of, which I think is one of the most wonderful experiences in writing. That connection is pure magic. And maybe most important, we will discuss how heavy an edit you are looking for: merely corrections, or indicating where more clarity is needed, or even helping you with the final word edits to get the most power you can from your prose. I will work as hard as you did to knock your book into the best possible shape we can.
