Andrew Hodges

Andrew Hodges – Editor

I focus on fantasy fiction, thrillers, & LGBTQ fiction. Commercial and literary. Developmental & line editor. Honest, kind, supportive.

Overview

I'm an editor who loves speculative fiction and novels with queer protagonists! I have an MA from the University of Cambridge (History and Philosophy of Science—very useful for worldbuilding!) and a PhD from the University of Manchester.

I've worked as a freelance editor or consultant for HarperCollins (Harper Fire imprint), Penguin Random House (Viking, Philomel, and Putnam imprints), Pan Macmillan, and for other traditional publishing imprints. and with Hugo finalists (Kaliane Bradley) and New York Times bestselling authors, including Alwyn Hamilton (on The Notorious Virtues, which I absolutely loved!) and Mia Sheridan, among others.

As a former cultural anthropologist, queer person, and author myself, I am sensitive to publishing traditions beyond Anglo-American publishing. I love building relationships with authors across languages and cultures.

My sweet spot is the area between genre and literary fiction. I enjoy well-plotted books with interesting characters, novels that play with conventions, and novels with a strong emotional resonance.

No AI, no erotica.

TESTIMONIALS

"The biggest value I received from Andy was in the way he helped me to deepen my entire story. He showed me where beats or characterizations I took for granted had gaps to a reader, or raised questions I hadn't considered."

—Robert Winter, Queer Romantasy Author

"Working with Andy made my debut novel better, and the results in distribution and reviews prove it."

—Nathan Wagner, Speculative Western Author

I hired Andy to do a line edit on my novel to make it easier for an agent/editor to take on. He excelled in catching style, format and grammar errors; and in fine-tuning sentences to draw readers closer to my characters or deeper into my story. I am particularly thankful for simple feedback that ...

Do you have a favorite resource for dealing with genre-specific editing?

For speculative fiction, the Mythcreants website and blog resources are amazing. I particularly like that they have clearly stated and interesting opinions and takes on content editing questions, such as the use of multiple points of view. (I know that fantasy authors can get quite trigger happy ...
