Amber Hatch

Amber Hatch – Editor

I have five books published in 17 languages. I'm clearsighted, considerate and affordable. I love authentic voices and powerful tales.

About me:
I have published five books in wellbeing and parenting with major publishers and my work has been translated into 17 languages. I have titles published by Penguin Random House (2015), Watkins Publishing (2015, 2016, & 2017) and Little, Brown (2017). Alongside my own writing and raising my children, I have worked as a freelance editor and manuscript assessor (fiction and non-fiction) for ten years including for Watkins Publishing. I have an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University (distinction). I have taught writing skills at Oxford University and Creative Writing for Wellbeing for mental health charity Mind.

How I work:
It's my passion to help you communicate as strongly as you can. I can help you recognise the strengths and weaknesses in your work and guide you to fix problems. Whether you are self-publishing or going down the traditional publishing route, I can help you shape up your manuscript so that you tell your story with authenticity and power.

I offer manuscript assessments, development editing and copyediting. I also enjoy working with authors over a longer time frame and can offer a mentoring package. I am also available as a ghostwriter.

My fees are fair and affordable, and I can offer a fast turnaround if time is short.

Fiction - I have a particular interest in children's and literary.

Non-fiction - I specialise in wellbeing and memoir.

“Amber doesn’t pull any punches and lets you know what is working and what is not. If you want somebody who will tell you your work is ‘nice’, Amber is not for you. On the other hand, if you want someone who will make your work publishable, Amber will help you get there. She’s brilliant and knows what works.” (This author went on to strike a four-book deal with Bloomsbury.)

Amber did an excellent job on developmental editing. Her comments were thoughtful and thorough. She was frank and tough, and I am certain that I will have a much stronger manuscript because of her work,

Amber was, first, a thoughtful reader who took the trouble to understand what the story was that I intended to tell. She also identified other story threads that could be highlighted more, and it helped the overall narrative a great deal. On top of all that, she helped make the language crisper and identified opportunities to prune out unnecessary detail. I would love to work with Amber again...

Simply could not fault Amber. As a first time writer it is very easy to hope for a pat on the back and told how wonderful you are. Amber directed me in a professional and personal way in the view to achieve the best possible results. Responsive, kind, efficient and professional for those wanting honest and valuable advice.

I found Amber's comments and edits were very sensible and gave me the opportunity to correct, and expand wording that I took for granted. I would definitely recommend Amber and would use her again.

Amber is a wonderful editor. She took her time to note every place in my ~70,000-word manuscript where I could tighten, cut content, and stick to the action in the present moment. She was sensitive to the material I produced without having any reservations in showing me where meaningful improvements could be made. Her value is terrific, and her voice as an editor comes through the comments. I ...
