Alexandra Petropoulos

Alexandra Petropoulos – Editor

Copy editor, journalist and writer with over 9 years of experience editing magazines and websites. MA Creative Writing graduate, Birkbeck

Overview

I'm a copy editor with experience editing everything from print magazines and journals, fiction, picture books, creative non-fiction, websites, adverts, and promotional material. My main experience and expertise is in editing music, culture and travel journalism, though after recently graduating from Birkbeck's Creative Writing MA, I've spent the last year working with more fiction, particularly as a copy editor with MIR Online, a well-respected forum for new writing.

I am available to work with your copy at any point along its process – whether you need developmental editing to find your perfect story, line editing for grammar and syntax, mechanical editing for house styles, proofreading, formatting or indexing.

For journalism, my passions and areas of expertise are music, culture and travel.
For fiction, my passions and areas of expertise are children's picture books, humour and magical realism – the quirkier, the better!

Work experience

Self-employed

Oct, 2012 — Present

I have ten years of experience editing everything from print magazines and journals, fiction, picture books, creative non-fiction, websites, adverts, and promotional material.

As a journalist I mainly write about international music, culture and travel, with particular interest and expertise in sacred and ecstatic music and gender and politics in music. My work includes features, interviews, reviews and news pieces. My articles have appeared in Songlines Magazine, The Guardian, The Strad, Wanderlust and Paa Tanzania.

As a fiction writer, my stories are often about the weird and wonderful and have been published in the The Mechanics’ Institute Review, Sunburnt Saints: A Seventy2One Anthology and MIR Online. My short story ‘Tree of Life™’ has been published twice and I’m currently working on my first novel, a silly story about a talking coyote.

Songlines Magazine

Sep, 2021 — Dec, 2022 (about 1 year)

A well-distributed consumer world music magazine. I wrote regular content for print and online, including
interviews, reviews and features; copy edited and proofed all of the magazine’s content; oversaw the publication process for every issue; commissioned features and reviews; worked with the designer to ensure editorially effectively design; and represented Songlines internationally at festivals, conferences and on industry panels.

MIR Online

Mar, 2019 — Present

MIR Online is an online new writing forum. I copy edit fiction and creative non-fiction stories posted on the site, working closely with authors to ensure creative integrity.

Songlines Magazine

Oct, 2012 — Sep, 2021 (almost 9 years)

A well-distributed consumer world music magazine. I write regular content for print and online, including
interviews, reviews and features; copy edit and proof all of the magazine’s content; oversee the publication process for every issue; commission features and reviews; manage contributor invoicing; work with designer to ensure editorially effectively design; represent Songlines internationally at festivals, conferences
and on industry panels; and line manage editorial assistant and freelance sub-editor.

Musika

May, 2011 — Jan, 2014 (over 2 years)

An online music magazine. I edited and commissioned the site's content including news, features and reviews. I also wrote and produced content including reviews, features, interviews and podcasts.

World Music Network

Oct, 2010 — May, 2011 (7 months)

A UK-based world music record label. For this project I edited chapters of The Rough Guide to World Music to 10% of their original word count and repurposed the content for online. I also curated multimedia content to accompany online posts.

Working with Alexandra was a delight, but more than that, I felt completely confident in her ability and qualifications to review my short book on music theory. She made excellent suggestions, for which I'm grateful, and I feel so much better about my book being published now that it has been reviewed by an expert in music theory and the written word.
Alexandra P.
Thanks so much Janice! Was a joy working with you on this book. Good luck with everything! :)

Alex was great throughout the process and I’ve learned a huge amount about writing rhyming children’s books through our collaboration. Alex was always on hand to advise and pushed me to be more creative in my approach. I’ve learned so much and am thankful we had the chance to work together. I look forward to collaborating again soon!
Alexandra P.
Aw, thanks for the lovely words Sajid! It's been my pleasure! I can't wait to see this book on the shelves! ;)
