Work experience
Self-employed
In August 2019, I set up my own editorial freelance business. Recent projects have included copy-editing part of a major dossier on Iran's networks of influence and a sweeping structural edit of an academic textbook on US–Latin American relations.
International Institute for Strategic Studies
I edited and project-managed Armed Conflict Survey and Strategic Survey, two flagship annuals published by The International Institute for Strategic Studies, one of the world’s foremost think-tanks on defence and security issues.
Thames & Hudson
At one of the world’s leading illustrated publishers, my role was to project manage several titles in our US college list from development stages to sign-off, including copy-editing, commissioning illustrators and working with designers and picture researchers to produce high-level, high-quality educational textbooks.
Cornerstones Literary Consultancy
At the Cornerstones Literary Consultancy I reviewed manuscripts, wrote in-depth reports and mentored authors. I specialised in literary and crime fiction, with one previously unpublished client securing a three-book deal with a major trade publisher after we had worked together. I offered 360-degree edits, providing structural critiques, suggestions for line edits and assessing market suitability.
Rogers, Coleridge and White
At the Rogers, Coleridge and White literary agency I worked alongside two primary agents, supporting a list of more than one hundred authors. I edited manuscripts and proposals through multiple drafts in the areas of commercial, crime and literary fiction and narrative non-fiction; read the unsolicited manuscript submissions and found several authors who later secured publishing deals (including Ginny Baily, Stephen Grosz, Malcolm Mackay and Simon Stephenson); negotiated contracts with major trade publishers; and pitched clients' works to newspapers, magazines, radio broadcasters, publishing houses and audio publishers.
