Alex Goodwin

Alex Goodwin – Editor

Experienced, enthusiastic and versatile editor who loves getting to grips with a difficult draft of a novel or tackling non-fiction.

Overview

For me, an editor is the person who can help you say what you want to say in the best possible way. I’m experienced and empathetic: in the course of ten years working in publishing, I’ve helped writers from blank page to published book, but with an MA in Creative Writing, I understand what it’s like from the writer’s side of the fence too.

I specialise in literary and crime fiction, from running through story outlines to tackling your twentieth draft. Writing a novel is a long, arduous and often confusing process: I want to help you see the big picture about your work and get excited about it again. On the way, I’ll help bring clarity to your characters’ intentions, pace and urgency to your plotting, and suggest how to make your prose shine. I get results: one client came to me with a novel that wasn’t clicking, we spent a year working on it and he subsequently secured a three-book deal with a major publisher. Start with an editorial assessment and we can take it from there.

I also offer the full suite of editorial services, plus I’m versatile: I’ve worked across many types of writing, from literary fiction and thrillers to academic textbooks and research-driven analysis. If you’ve written it, chances are that I will have edited something similar!

I started my career at the Rogers, Coleridge and White literary agency in London, where I discovered new talent,
worked with established writers and immersed myself in every kind of trade book imaginable, from business psychology bestsellers to literary novels spun with lightest of touches. I went on to work at Thames & Hudson, project-managing and editing beautiful full-colour textbooks on art appreciation, ancient history and archaeology. Most recently, I edited annual reviews of trends in armed conflict and geopolitics for The International Institute of Strategic Studies, a think tank in London. I also work for Cornerstones Literary Consultancy as an Industry Editor and Mentor.

I also have a sideline writing novelty books featuring guinea pigs for Bloomsbury (A Guinea Pig Pride and Prejudice etc) – if you ever need a book abridged to the length of a postcard, I’m the editor for you!

Work experience

Self-employed

Aug, 2019 — Present

In August 2019, I set up my own editorial freelance business. Recent projects have included copy-editing part of a major dossier on Iran's networks of influence and a sweeping structural edit of an academic textbook on US–Latin American relations.

International Institute for Strategic Studies

Feb, 2018 — Aug, 2019 (over 1 year)

I edited and project-managed Armed Conflict Survey and Strategic Survey, two flagship annuals published by The International Institute for Strategic Studies, one of the world’s foremost think-tanks on defence and security issues.

Thames & Hudson

May, 2016 — Feb, 2018 (almost 2 years)

At one of the world’s leading illustrated publishers, my role was to project manage several titles in our US college list from development stages to sign-off, including copy-editing, commissioning illustrators and working with designers and picture researchers to produce high-level, high-quality educational textbooks.

Cornerstones Literary Consultancy

Sep, 2015 — Oct, 2017 (about 2 years)

At the Cornerstones Literary Consultancy I reviewed manuscripts, wrote in-depth reports and mentored authors. I specialised in literary and crime fiction, with one previously unpublished client securing a three-book deal with a major trade publisher after we had worked together. I offered 360-degree edits, providing structural critiques, suggestions for line edits and assessing market suitability.

Rogers, Coleridge and White

Jan, 2008 — Oct, 2013 (over 5 years)

At the Rogers, Coleridge and White literary agency I worked alongside two primary agents, supporting a list of more than one hundred authors. I edited manuscripts and proposals through multiple drafts in the areas of commercial, crime and literary fiction and narrative non-fiction; read the unsolicited manuscript submissions and found several authors who later secured publishing deals (including Ginny Baily, Stephen Grosz, Malcolm Mackay and Simon Stephenson); negotiated contracts with major trade publishers; and pitched clients' works to newspapers, magazines, radio broadcasters, publishing houses and audio publishers.
