Alex Brown

Alex Brown – Editor

Assistant Editor at Macmillan Publisher's St. Martin's Press; Sensitivity/Authenticity Proofreader; Freelance Editor and Copy Writer

Overview

I’ve been an educator for most of my career with teens of color and queer youth from NYC. I’ve been at SMP since June 2019, and have had the pleasure to be an editorial assistant on books like Eloquent Rage by Brittney Cooper, The Address Book by Dierdre Mask, and Carefree Black Girls by Zeba Blay. I am currently the co-editor on Profit and Punishment by Tony Messenger. I have also acquired a book on which I will be the sole editor, forthcoming 2023 and have a Master of Fine Arts for Fiction Writing from Brooklyn College. I’m particularly excited by writing that portrays the experiences of marginalized peoples in authentic and passionate ways.I specialize in authenticity and sensitivity reading for a variety of topics, editorial restructuring for plot elevation, narrative clarity and readability, and query letter review. As the first line of publishing submission reading at a publishing house, I am apt at recognizing the changes and editorial direction to most accurately portray the author's intention and maintain reader's interest. I tend to suggest actionable and reasonable changes within the framework of the preexisting story, rather than structural reframing of the entire story, for both fiction and non-fiction. Currently, I don't do copyediting. Only developmental editing, authenticity proofreading/fact checking, & editorial assessment.
