Adelé Hensley – Editor

I'm a certified BELS editor who specializes in science textbooks, with 10 years of editing experience at an education publishing company.

Overview

I love writing and editing in all its forms, especially in the field of science. I'm a certified life sciences editor through BELS, an organization that provides a standard of proficiency for those who edit scientific manuscripts. For more than 10 years, I edited and contributed to at least a dozen science textbooks, lab manuals, and teaching guides for an education publisher.
⠀⠀⠀ ⠀
Science books don’t have to be dry and boring—I enjoy working with writers to develop an engaging voice that presents the facts in an interesting, easy-to-understand way. I’m also good at helping writers create diagrams and charts to better explain their data. From developmental editing to proofreading, I can guide writers through each step of the editing process and make their manuscripts shine.

Work experience

EnVeritas Group

Aug, 2015 — Present

I write and edit SEO content for an international hotel brand. This includes local details, travel tips, and creative touches to give a potential guest the feel of the hotel and the city. I’m also responsible for new hotels that come into the fold, taking them from the first ideas for each page to a well-written website.
Currently, I spend most of my time editing. I review proofs from EVG writers each week and edit them for grammar, spelling, overall tone, and consistency with house style.

• Research the attractions of a city and talk to hotel representatives about what makes their hotel appealing to guests
• Write and optimize the content to target specific online searches
• Guide new-hotel representatives through the process of creating a brand-new website
• Edit the content of other writers to encourage style consistency across all websites
• Contribute to and edit house style

BJU Press

Nov, 2013 — Jul, 2015 (over 1 year)

From botany and zoology to genetics and human anatomy, my responsibilities as a science writer included staying abreast of the trends in scientific research and science education. I then wrote new material for biology and chemistry textbooks to keep them fresh and up to date with today’s standards. I also worked with subject-matter experts who reviewed my writing and helped me shape it into a clear, concise, and accurate product.

• Researched, developed, and wrote Biology, 5th edition, in collaboration with subject-matter experts
• Worked daily with designers, artists, copyright specialists, outsource vendors, editors, and other writers to storyboard and complete each product
• Wrote the teacher’s edition and ancillary materials for Chemistry, 4th edition
• Contributed to the writing of the textbook, lab manual with teacher’s edition, and tests for Chemistry, 4th edition

BJU Press

Oct, 2007 — Nov, 2013 (about 6 years)

As a project editor, I standardized the styles across 3 product lines (life science, biology, chemistry) to make the books uniform and the styles easier to apply. I helped writers find a united voice, something that’s important for a textbook with multiple writers. Using the project’s house style that I created, I continued to refine manuscripts through copyediting. When all proofs were completed and approved, I sent the files out for a first-run print, checking a mock-up of the printed book one last time before a full printing.

• Well versed in the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th and 16th editions, and Scientific Style and Format, 7th edition
• Developed a house style for several product lines that influenced the overall house style of the company
• Completed editing of three product lines: Life Science, 4th edition (1,800 pages); Chemistry, 3rd edition (1,600 pages); and Biology, 4th edition (2,000 pages)
