Sofia Geck

Sofia Geck – Editor

A multidisciplinary developmental editor, dual-wielding experience in both academic and fiction publishing, particularly children's media.

Overview

Whether it's science or science fiction, children or academic audiences, I'll work with you one-on-one to ensure clarity and concision in your writing. I draw on experience from multiple realms, including acquisition editing at Springer Nature and educational writing for children's media companies like Sesame Workshop and PBS Kids.

On the science writing side, I specialize in academic books and journal articles in the behavioral sciences, particularly psychology, criminology, and social work. Drawing on my in-house experience, I can advise on how to tailor proposals for maximum publisher appeal, including writing effective marketing text and shaping your work to target particular audiences.

My background is in English literature and psychology, and in addition to academic writing, I'm equally enthusiastic to take on fiction projects. Beyond my experience working on children's educational media, I am passionate about high-concept speculative fiction, graphic novels, and podcasts/audio dramas.

My editorial letters are thorough and full of insightful questions designed to help you consider the most effective way to frame an idea or argument for your intended readers. I’m happy to adapt my services based on the needs of your specific project, ranging from a full evaluation of your book’s structure, style, and scope to a shorter consultation on the best way to approach publishers with a manuscript proposal.

Sofia's ability to couch guidance and criticism in a digestible manner is rare. Her editorial letter shone a flashlight into the dark corners of my writing and exposed a few rotten beams and a possum's nest. I definitely plan to work with her again. But first, the possums.

Sofia has been wonderful to work with. She is organized and thorough, and provided an outline of her process, including expectations for meetings and a timeline. She also provided summaries of each conversation we had. Sofia’s editing notes were comprehensive and valuable. She definitely made my writing better, and did so with kindness and consistency. I definitely plan to use her services again.
