Shana Murph

Shana Murph – Editor

Editor specializing in health education, African-American life, Womanist studies, and Black theology. More than 20 years of experience.

As an editor, I have more than 20 years of experience working in book publishing, communications, and e-learning. I have 10 years of book industry experience working as a development editor, copy editor and project manager for publishers such as Perseus Books Group, Elsevier, Wolters Kluwer Health, and David C Cook. In woking at Wolters Kluwer Health, I have performed development editing on titles such as Contemporary Practical/Vocational Nursing by Corinne Kurzen and Fundamental Nursing Skills and Concepts by Barbara Timby, Development editing entails checking clinical content for currency and accuracy, rewording unclear language, reorganizing features and sections of content, and ensuring that complex concepts are thoroughly explained. As a development editor in nursing education, I have also been able to consult with authors on how to handle cultural content and sensitive topics regarding race and ethnicity in health care settings.

I provide development editing, copyediting, and proofreading services for writers who are self-publishing or working with a publisher. I also provide editing services for publishing companies. My specialties include Christian living and curriculum, devotionals, African American history and culture, nursing education (LPN/LVN, BSN, and advanced practice), politics, and history. My digital publishing experience includes copyediting e-learning courseware for nursing instructors and students, which includes assessments, case studies, and simulations.

Because I have worked worked across several book publishing industries (Christian, trade, and STEM), I have a very in-depth knowledge of various practices in book publishing.

Shana was professional, timely, and helpful with copy edits. But she wasn't a good fit for my book. She just didn't get what I was doing. Shana told me my book was "not a book." I'm a journalist, and my book is typical of the kind of book you can expect from a journalist. But she called it "a collection of quotes." I think that's why she didn't give it 100%. There were errors in her edits tha...

I didn't do a lot of communicating with Shana. At the beginning and at the end in writing. Her editing was good. At first, I thought her evaluation of my story was a little hard but after thinking about it, I feel she acurately appraised everything and if I follow her suggestions I will have a good book.
