Martin Schneider

Martin Schneider – Editor

Editor/proofreader for 20+ years. My books win awards and make the NYT bestseller list. Yale UP, Harvard UP, Penguin Random House, etc.

Overview

I have made my living as a copy-editor and proofreader for more than 20 years. I have been involved in the production of over 300 books for prestigious publishing companies like Harvard University Press, Yale University Press, and Penguin Random House, among others.

Actually, why stop there? Princeton University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, Cornell University Press, MIT Press, Georgetown University Press, I've worked with them all.

I have edited books that went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award — not even the same book! On one project I had to bring order to a very complex and messy translated manuscript by a recent Nobel Laureate that is now a widely read classic in English. A bunch of my books have hit #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. I am an extremely reliable, fast, and experienced copy-editor of all types of published material. I am an enthusiastic, energetic, and cooperative team member.

For the prestigious literary quarterly The Yale Review, I am responsible for copy-editing a wide variety of fiction, poetry, memoirs, and essays by a broad spectrum of world-renowned writers. I spent several years as a contributing editor for a top website specializing in "dangerous" content about art, culture, and rock music, and I have edited liner notes for record labels. I also copy-edit the alumni magazine for the Yale Law School.

I spent several years editing tourism/promotional copy for a major international concern as well as one of the top symphony orchestras in the United States. I have reviewed about 100 books for Publishers Weekly. There's not a lot about printed matter and the publishing industry practices I do not know. I work in a lot of different contexts and I know how to adjust my editing style to suit the project at hand.

I am fluent in German and partially fluent in French. Editing translation projects is one of my specialties!

Martin is not only a great editor, he is a very good person. He went above the call of the contract and gave me feedback on my manuscript that helped me make it a better story. He spoke from the gut and laid out what he really thought, and it helped me change the story for the better. I of course recommend him highly without reservation and I plan to hire him again.

I'm so glad I picked Martin to work on my book. He's a true genius when it comes to copy editing, identifying minor and major fixes to elevate the writing and story. He is not only thorough, but he's patient, as well, taking the time to explain the edits. I will definitely contact Martin the next time I need editing work.

Because of delays on both our parts, I am just now beginning to review his comments on my book. However, I am pleased that he has cooperated in adjusting our schedules for the work completed. I would highly recommend Martin to anyone seeking his expertise.

Martin is a pleasure to work with, prompt and professional. He also gives feedback and insight as a reader, which is way outside the duties of an editor. Martin delivers value to your manuscript well beyond what you pay him. Naturally, I highly recommend him and will continue to hire him for my editing needs.
