Sarah Flood-Baumann

Sarah Flood-Baumann – Designer

15 years of experience! Award-winning! Work-horse! I design book covers, cookbooks, author proposals, magazines, & publications that matter.

Overview

Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m a book designer with more than 15 years in publishing and an MFA in Graphic Design from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

I create must-pick-up covers and thoughtfully designed books that balance beauty with strategy. My specialty is cookbooks, author proposals, catalogs, artist books, anniversary books, poetry collections, and nonfiction titles.

Clients describe me as professional, organized, and deeply collaborative, with a talent for blending creativity and structure in every project.

My work has earned awards and the trust of clients including Sunday Riley, Sarabande Books, University Press of Kentucky, the Chicago Blackhawks, and Ohio State University Press.

From my studio in Lexington, Kentucky, I design projects that are impactful, polished, and (let’s be honest) really, really good-looking.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jan, 2018 — Present
I've worked with existing publishing houses like Koehler Books, The Reading List, Sarabande books. I've also designed books for award-winning self-published authors. Other clients include Planned Parenthood, Cape Charles Distillery, The Sunday Riley.

San Antonio Current

Sep, 2015 — Dec, 2017 (about 2 years)
At the San Antonio Current, I art-directed and designed over 52 issues each year, along with six high-gloss supplement publications. Every week, I collaborated with a team of editors, writers, photographers, illustrators, and the marketing folks. Former Current Content Editor, Alejandra Gonzalez said this of my work: "Working with Sarah in an editorial setting was nothing short of ideal. A quick designer with a thoughtful process, Sarah’s work at the Current added depth to our storytelling with a clear respect for the content, characters and authors. The amount of research she puts into every design is inspiring and her work ethic and dedication to detail is commendable. No project too big or small, Sarah was a force in the editorial department and the backbone of the team."

Kentucky Derby Museum

Sep, 2011 — Aug, 2014 (almost 3 years)
In-house designer that wore many hats. Designed marketing materials for all Museum departments. Photographed and designed gift shop bi-annual catalog. Worked with curatorial department to produce and design special exhibits.

Sarah has been a pleasure to collaborate with! Though I've been published conventionally, this was my first experience having an ebook formatted, and she patiently guided me through the process. Her communication was professional, prompt, concise and clear and she was always responsive to feedbac...

Terrible experience. After Sarah sent a bid and we agreed upon, there was a misleading wording that led to a rough go at the beginning. We had a phone conversation and to avoid further miscommunication, and started moving forward. She submitted 3 pages rough draft to see if I liked the design...

I was really proud of the work done for Liz and I'm sad the world won't get to see the concepts designed. Unfortunately, the client repeatedly asked me to work beyond the scope of the project. Th...
