Sarah Doughty

Sarah Doughty – Editor

Editor with 20+ years’ freelance experience in children’s books and non-fiction for adults. Specialist areas: cookery, sailing and craft

Overview

I started my career in children’s non-fiction, editing a wide variety of fun, illustrated titles for schools and libraries. The titles supported the national curriculum, particularly in the areas of literacy and numeracy.

Since then I have broadened my range into adult non-fiction, working freelance for publishers such as Ivy Press, Godsfield, Anness, Adlard Coles, Parragon and the Guild of Master Craftsmen. I have project managed a wide variety of subjects – including mind, body and spirit titles, illustrated encyclopaedias, practical sailing guides and cookery books.

I have also had experience working in fiction, including stories with the Book Guild, helping new authors with their most exciting projects – their first novels.

Having worked in-house for many years, I now work mainly from my home on the south coast. I work on books and also work as a subeditor and proofreader on a variety of craft magazines.

Overall, I have sound editorial skills and have worked on many projects from concept through to publication. I am passionate about books and like to use my long experience in the industry to help others produce their best work. Having worked for many years in illustrated non-fiction I believe it is important to make books as accessible as possible with clear language (no jargon please!) – as well as visually appealing.

I am a supportive, reliable and adaptable editor, who enjoys bringing together words and images on a page and working with authors, designers and illustrators on a project.
