Sandra Herner – Editor

25+ years nurturing each writer’s unique voice. Bestselling clients published by Kensington, Berkley, etc. Specializing in series writers

Overview

For over two decades, I have provided editorial services for writers and publishers around the world and across the United States and Canada creating reader-attracting books and fan-satisfying series.

My articles have appeared in Writer's Digest Book's "Novel & Short Story Market," and I was profiled in "The Market Guide for Young Writers." I was Senior Editor for Writer's Intl. Forum, which placed in Writer's Digest's Top 50 Fiction Markets for three consecutive years. I’ve been a contributing writer for Write-to-Done and a freelance developmental editor for Crooked Lane Books of New York.

Helping writers achieve success with their writing dreams is my greatest joy, whether they publish a single book, fulfill a personal journey, or create a career as a commercial writer. I edit memoirs, self-help, and most fiction genres, but my fiction specialty is SF/F, mystery, and adventures. I review continuity, tone, characterization, setting, plot, structure, pacing, marketability, etc. Together, let's fulfill your writing dream!

Success for my authors:

* I have worked with Susan Furlong, from Illinois, for many years. She is an agented bestselling author of several commercially-published series of cozy mysteries (for Berkley), taking over an existing series and then with her own series. Kensington published her more gritty action/police/veteran series. Susan’s latest book of psychological suspense is “What They Don’t Know” is from Simon and Schuster.

* Client Jim Hancock’s first book The Hawk Enigma—a military thriller— was not only successful in the self-publishing circle but also awarded a silver medal from the Military Writers Society of America. He was also a finalist in last year’s Adventure Writer's Competition, hosted by Dirk Cussler, son of Clive Cussler

* Also on the self-publishing front, Gary McAvoy and I began collaborating when he started his Magdalene Chronicles just a couple of years ago. He has been awarded Amazon’s “Best Selling Author” status and has nine books in his series with over 4,000 great reviews on Amazon.

* Here is a review on Amazon for client Brian Roberts’ debut novel, Crimson Lucre: “The writing is so good, the editing and formatting so perfect that after the first couple chapters I had to Google the author to find out how many books he had written. When I found out he was a late blooming retired engineer with just a few books out there I was pleasantly shocked. I reached out through his website and he told me that he pays to have his works put through extensive editing processes. They read BETTER than many authors I've read with 20 more books under their belt who are represented by agents and published by major publishing houses.”

Brian now has three books in his series and is working on his fourth.

Sandra is a FABULOUS editor! Her notes are so thorough, and she caught so many things that I would never have thought of. Her feedback is also direct but kind—the perfect balance between encouraging and tell-it-like-it-is. Working with Sandra made me excited to get to work on my edits!

Sandra was a joy to work with. She made cogent observations about everything from holes in the plot to best voice in which to describe action. She looked at pacing, character development, scene-setting, and overall story line. It was just the sort of feedback that I needed to be confident that I was creating a good story that readers would like to read.
