Sandra Herner – Editor

Developmental editor helping professionals transform real-world expertise into compelling, best-selling, market-ready books and series.

Overview

I provide developmental editing for professionals—particularly those in the medical, military, and high-tech fields—who want to transform their real-world expertise and experiences into compelling books that attract loyal readers.

For more than three decades, I have helped accomplished professionals translate complex knowledge into clear, engaging, story-driven narratives. My clients include both commercially published authors and successful independent writers who are building reader-satisfying, award-winning series.

I believe strongly in the human connection between editor and writer—and between writer and reader. AI can be valuable for research and organization, but the heart of powerful storytelling must come from the author’s lived experience, imagination, and voice. My role is to help shape that expertise into a structured, compelling book while preserving the author’s unique perspective.

* Commercial Success:

Authors I have worked with have secured publishing contracts with houses including Simon & Schuster, Seventh Street Books, Kensington, and Martin Sisters Publishing. Client Susan Furlong’s novel was included in the New York Times list of “The 10 Best Crime Novels of the Year.”

* Self-Publishing Success:

On the independent publishing side, PJ Peterson—a retired internal-medicine physician—began working with me when launching her Julia Child mystery series, featuring a retired doctor solving crimes. After seven successful books in that series, she launched another popular series, Christie’s Flower Shoppe Mysteries, becoming a top-selling Amazon author with hundreds of enthusiastic reader reviews.

*Award-Winning Authors:

Client Jim Hancock’s debut military thriller earned:

Silver Medal – Military Writers Society of America

Winner – Books Shelf 2023 Writing Awards

Literary Titan Silver Book Award – 2024

He later became a finalist in the Adventure Writers Competition, hosted by Dirk Cussler, son of Clive Cussler.

Another client, Jennifer Sadera, received a Gold Medal in the IPPY Awards (Independent Publisher Book Awards) for her suspense novel I Know She Was There.

* Specialties:

Helping professionals build successful book series is one of my greatest passions.

My developmental editing focuses on the elements that turn expertise into compelling fiction:

-- Story structure and pacing

-- Character development

-- Continuity across series

-- Tone and narrative voice

-- Setting and world-building

-- Market positioning

* Primary genres include:

-> Mystery (Cozy through Psychological Suspense)

-> Science Fiction (including Military SF)

-> Fantasy (Urban through Epic)

-> Adventure and Thriller (Western through International Intrigue)

-> Cross-genre and experimental fiction

If you bring deep professional knowledge to your writing, I can help shape that expertise into a compelling story while preserving your voice and vision.

I am extremely pleased with Sandra's developmental edit of my thriller, "Chasing the Bangkok Dragon." First, she provided an overall assessment, key elements that I need to fix/improve, and an analysis of each of the main characters. All of it was very insightful and actionable. Sandra also suppl...

Once more, an outstanding editing experience with Shandra. I know I'm getting better as a writer, but she still found several places that substantially improved Forging the Chain Breakers. Thank you so much, Sandra. My books wouldn't be near as good without your firm but gentle guidance.
