paola bertozzi – Designer

Graphic designer working in the publishing industry, especially with book covers

Overview

As soon as I graduated at the graphic design school of Castello Sforzesco in Milan. I began working as a graphic designer in advertising agencies and design offices: different experiences which broadened my knowledge and flexibility.

In those years I learned that graphic design also means knowing how to marry beauty and information together, and how to communicate elaborate concepts with clarity and simplicity. In my early working years we still designed with rule & square & tons of glue

Then, since the 90s I have transferred all that experience into computer graphics, but still treasuring my past “manual” skills.

In the last 15 years I mainly designed book covers and book interiors. I am a voracious reader and I know how important is the cover in choosing a book according to what its cover communicates.

Thus, translating in a cover the soul of a book is always my goal, especially with not yet famous authors.

I often work together with the book author, and the more his ideas are clear, the more I am able to do a good job.

In this regard my best experience was collaborating with Umberto Eco for his “Storia della bruttezza” (“On Ugliness”): Eco was always very simple and articulate in explaining to me his requirements, so that I could translate them into my layout.

Paola showed great creativity, patience and understanding with me as a first timer in this process. I worked with her on the second book as a result of her work on the first. And I will work with her on the third, now being written. Many, many thanks, Paola. Rod Mountain
