50th Anniversary of the Santa Barbara Oil Spill Historic Photo Exhibit and Catalog

To honor the half century mark, this carefully curated exhibit of historic images of the 1969 Santa Barbara Oil Spill that sparked the modern environmental movement was displayed on bamboo walls in the park at Santa Barbara Earth Day (2019). The two-day event saw more than 50,000 attendees. The project was a collaboration between Mercury Press International and Community Environmental Council, and their sponsors and donors. A small, square 50-page catalog of the images was included and given away for free at the event. A larger edition of the catalog is still in the works.

Rise Up

"Rise Up" offers a lighthearted and celebratory overview of stilting and the benefit of raising one’s perspective. Longtime stilter Marc McGinnes, who perfected his art over 40 years in Santa Barbara’s Solstice Parade, explains how a small investment in a pair of stilts can translate into a lifetime of fun and joy. Beginning with the basics, McGinnes gives the lowdown on falling, equipment, accessories, and how to begin and continue stilting at any age. Looking back at his own remarkable experiences, Marc expresses the shift in consciousness that occurs while gliding above the fray, recounting his view from the head of the parade since it began. As a well-known environmental lawyer and UCSB lecturer, he also describes how stilts took him to new heights in the classroom, the courtroom, and on the streets, inviting readers to imagine how to use stilt-walking to raise the stakes—or simply elevate the mood—in everyday life. Personal photographs selected from over four decades of Marc’s stilting career and drawings by his son Zach McGinnes (an artist and fellow stilter) clarify advice for rookies and express a stilt-walker’s heightened sense of fantasy and wonder.

In Love with Earth

This memoir by environmental legal pioneer Marc McGinnes chronicles a uniquely American history, from the "secret city" of Richland, WA, where Marc's mother worked on the Manhattan Project, to Marc’s ongoing work in the environmental movement at its birthplace in Santa Barbara after the devastating 1969 oil blowout. Recounting his involvement in the conference that presented the Santa Barbara Declaration of Environmental Rights, in the first Earth Day celebrations, and the creation of enduring institutions such as the Environmental Defense Center, the Community Environmental Council, and the Environmental Studies program at University of California Santa Barbara, this book is a valuable resource with an eyewitness account of the formative days of the environmental movement. It also tells the personal story of the author’s deeply spiritual transformation from a hotshot corporate lawyer who routinely represented the rapacious power elite to environmental lawyer, mediator and teacher. Changed forever by a photograph of Earth from space and a call from his powerful mentor in Congress, the trajectory of his life is redirected towards the pursuit of environmental justice. This inspiring volume is packed with tales of personal connections, surprising collaborations, leaps of faith, and acts of service that constitute the author’s long and successful campaign fighting for the planet he loves.

The Art of Symeon Shimin

Art as Liberation: After his family fled the Russian Pogroms, Symeon Shimin worked as a child laborer in Brooklyn and eventually grew to become a talented painter and muralist, as well as a renowned illustrator of children's books and Hollywood film posters of the 50s, 60s and 70s. This is the first collection of his lifetime's work, lovingly curated by his daughter, Tonia Shimin, with illustrated plates of a selection of works and essays by art critics Josef Woodward and Charles Donelan.

Better Together (2019)

The 1969 Union Oil blowout mobilized the Santa Barbara community to fight for the environment, inspiring the creation of many nonprofit organizations, Earth Day, the Environmental Protection Agency and the first interdisciplinary Environmental Studies program. The legacy of the oil spill continues to inform this community, which keeps coming together, providing local solutions to global environmental problems, exemplified when over 3,000 volunteers joined the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade to dig mud from homes after the deadly 2018 debris flow.
