Michael Schuler

Michael Schuler – Editor

An attentive proofreader and copy editor, I help you deliver clear, precise prose.

Overview

Attentiveness to the ways that small details accumulate and interact, creating meaning and beauty, is a key characteristic of writers. My goal as a proofreader is to collaborate as closely as I can with you, to supplement your natural attentiveness and help you deliver prose that conveys your message and style as clearly and accurately as possible.

My editing work is strongly influenced by my training and experience in the fields of architecture and urban design, where attention to the smallest details and to the big picture must be balanced. As an editor, I help you to navigate the rules and guidelines that define good writing, to decide when they should be applied or disregarded, and to make sure that the style and structure of your writing are supporting your overall vision.

As a freelance editor, I have worked on nearly a hundred novel-length fiction manuscripts as well as dozens of short stories and magazine and journal articles. I am looking forward to helping you make your book the best that it can be.

This is for a continuation of previous work Michael completed. He has an excellent memory. He knows better than I what goes on in my novel. He makes many edits that polishes the flow of language and keeps it from meandering. He works very fast and his calendar fills up quickly. He finds everything from comma splices to large paragraphs that don’t fit in the manuscript. He pointed out major prob...

Excellent work. He understood what I wanted to do with my novel and brought me forward into the best possible version of my work. Not only did he understand grammar and style in a way that, frankly, frightens me a little, he also understood why and when I wanted to break those rules. A wonderful person to work with, and I hope to get him to help with my next novel.

Michael is very thorough and works fast. He's very knowledgeable with grammar, sentence structure, etc. He even gave me a lot of developmental advice that was necessary for a viable manuscript. His advice and many edits made my writing shine like you'd expect a book in a bookstore to do. I'll definitely come back to him for more line editing.
