Overview

My editorial career started with Oxford University Press, translating and editing for their major new Spanish dictionary and ensuing Spanish and English learner dictionaries. I later worked freelance for Collins new dictionary project.

I then worked for 20 years at the Open University editing courses in Spanish, French, Italian, Education, Linguistics, Childhood Studies and more. This involved working closely with academic authors, doing substantive editing and course design, and collaborating with all production stakeholders on images, graphics and online interactivities.

My language-learning editing also includes an International Baccalaureat Spanish textbook (Cambridge University Press) and a PhD thesis.
I have also edited a book on dance theory and practice, and a biography - and am now editing fiction.

I will help you to determine clearly what it is you want to say and how best to arrange that thought or those ideas into an effective, readable shape. This can be done either from a written draft or before that has been developed. With an existing draft, I will work both from the detail and the broad picture at the same time, to see that there is a continuum of expression from high level to user-interface level.

So, I do development editing, or development edit with copyedit, or I can limit my input to a copyedit if desired. Or I also enjoy doing editorial assessment, to give you a steer on the direction and quality of what you have written or are in the process of writing.

My areas are Humanities: languages and language teaching, music (I am a classical musician), history and art; and Education. And fiction.
Much of my work has involved editing text written by non-native-English speakers, so I am used to rewording academic or educational writing into natural English.

Colleagues and clients have always found me reliable, responsive, good-humoured and motivating.

Michael not only understood the combination of developmental and copy editing feedback I requested, but over delivered in both areas. He also gave extra thoughtful suggestions based on his own language-learning and teaching experience. An author has hit the jackpot if their nonfiction manuscript lands in his hands. (He did well with US English too).

It was a great experience working with Michale Britton. With this being my first publication, I really needed someone who was willing to work with me as I attempted to meet all request of the publisher. After some collaboration, the rest was history and I was overly pleased with the results and the timely fashion in which the project was completed. I definitely recommend Mr. Britton for anyon...

Michael is an absolute gem. If Carlsberg did editors then he would probably be one of the best in the world. His key is that he steps into your mind and tries to understand the plot from your eyes and then directs you to different avenues which open up the plot and make it flow better. He is thorough, articulate and very dedicated.

I thoroughly enjoyed my interaction with Michael, who combines a forensic eye and attention to detail as a proof reader with the ability to scrutinize music notation, correct my mis-spelling of Spanish names, and a genuine interest in the subject matter. A very worthwhile collaboration.
