Michael Britton

Michael Britton – Editor

I have many years experience of editing Open University materials - Spanish, education, history, music and ELT. I now edit fiction as well.

Overview

I have been an in-house editor for Oxford University Press and Collier Macmillan, working on major Spanish dictionary projects, and then had 20 years experience of working at the Open University, editing courses in Spanish, French, Italian, Education, Linguistics and Childhood Studies.

My areas are Humanities: languages and language teaching, music (I am a classical musician), history, art, education and fiction.

Among the many interesting projects I have been involved in as a freelance are books on: dance theory and practice, a biography of a jazz guitarist, the epithelium in medicine, a biography of a boy raised in Colombia during police corruption of the 1970s, and Sikh philosophy combined with quantum physics! My language-learning profile includes an International Baccalaureate Spanish textbook (Cambridge University Press), a PhD thesis, and an easy-learn French book, and primary school phonics textbooks.

Much of my work has involved editing text written by non-native-English speakers, so I am used to rewording academic or educational writing into natural English.

I will help you to determine clearly what it is you want to say and how best to arrange those ideas into an effective, readable shape. This could be working from a draft you have written or working together to develop your project from the start. I look at both the detail and the broad picture at the same time, so that there is a continuum of expression from high level thought to user-interface level.

Colleagues and clients have always found me to be reliable, responsive, good-humoured and motivating.

Michael provided a developmental and copy edit for a book on Schubert. He brought his expertise in classical music (as a classical musician himself) to the work and his feedback and suggestions helped to both lift and clarify the book and helped to shape the book into the best it could be. We had a lot of messaging to check intentions and clarify things and Michael was excellent at checking on ...
