Overview
You’re a writer; you may have written your first book. It might be fiction or nonfiction. It might be a cookbook, a memoir, or a children’s book. It might be a book of photographs, advice on how to break into a particular career, or a self-help manual. No matter: you’ve written a book and you know you need an editor. But you don’t know who to choose or what to expect, either from your editor or from the editorial process. You’re feeling a little uncertain and maybe even a little intimidated.
Don’t be.
What you’re feeling is completely normal and I deal with this all the time.
Producing a book is a collaborative effort. You’ve put in blood, sweat, and tears to get words out of your head and on to paper or screen. Now your editor steps in to help you make your book the best it can be. My job, as your editor, is to guide you, encourage you, and meet you at the finish line with a resounding cheer. You’ll find it all much less nerve-wracking than you expected and you may even find yourself enjoying it.
When we’re finished and you get the final, edited manuscript, you’ll look at it. You’ll recognize the words as definitely your words, but they will be somehow shinier and smoother, and you will marvel at how professional the work is. Yes, you are indeed a writer. You can feel proud.
Now go forth and publish.

Self-employed
I've been freelancing full time since 2008. Before that—way before that—I worked at Mitchell Beazley (now Octopus Publishing). In between the two, I raised children and helped various people with various jobs, all of them to do with words.
