Matt Henderson-Ellis

Matt Henderson-Ellis – Editor

NYC-trained editor (Doubleday) specializing in manuscript assessments and developmental editing for crime/mystery, and daring genre fiction.

Overview

Important: I'm booked until early February, so please only query me if you have some flexibility in your schedule.

So, you’ve written a novel or nonfiction manuscript and you know it’s good. Your friends think so. Your spouse thinks so. Your cat is a solid supporter. Everybody says that you should get it published, or publish it yourself. But your standards are higher, and you know you need a qualified editor to bring out the best in your book.

Hi, I’m Matt. I’ve been working as an editor for 25 years, specializing in manuscript assessment and developmental editing for genres like crime, true crime, mystery, horror, and memoir. I’ve worked with NYT best-sellers, and award-winning indie authors. Some of my most successful projects have included military fiction, historical mysteries, and neo-noir crime novels. I especially enjoy working with war veterans and first-time authors.

What I will support you with:

—Strong, active opening pages.

—Plot pacing throughout.

—Plot holes, telegraphed payoffs.

—Credible, fully dynamic characters (even the secondary ones).

—Word choice. Most writers have tics and overuse certain words.

—Line-by-line writing, alerting you to monotonous sentence constructions.

—Description that "shows" and doesn't "tell." We have five senses, let's

use them all.

—Boiling your book down to its unique hook.

Recommendations for routes to publication, tips for perseverance, and my discreet support are always included.

But I'm more than just an editor. I have been in the trenches as a writer for years. As a traditionally published novelist, my debut Keeping Bedlam at Bay in the Prague Cafe was called "Darkly comic . . . immersive, nostalgic, and

thoroughly enjoyable," by Booklist. I bring my talents as a writer and

editor to bear on every project I undertake.

Request a quote and ask about my editing process, availability, or whatever. I'm here to help writers.

"Highly, highly recommended. When I sent my manuscript to Matt for a critique and feedback, I feared he’d come back to tell me that the story was broken, the writing was terrible and the characters lame. I worried about that because I believed it was all true. What I got back from Matt was a gentle confirmation of my worst fears. I also got back an incredibly insightful critique." — Frank Freudberg, author of neo-noir crime fiction Baby Please Don’t Go (1207 Amazon reviews)

As a writer of nonfiction, I was taking a first dive into novel writing with a murder mystery. But the finished manuscript lacked a spark. The pieces were there but the story didn’t draw the reader in. Matt diagnosed the problems and laid out specific recommendations for fixing them. I am knee-deep in a rewrite to implement those changes and the piece is coming alive. Matt was a pleasure to wor...

I can't stress enough how lucky I was to find Matt. This was my second novel and the second he did a developmental edit for. Not only have both drafts been wildly improved through his work, but my writing took a massive leap between books one and two by applying his suggestions and guidance. Matt doesn't just provide you an assessment of where your story is, but suggestions on how to improve it...

Working with Matt was great. I hired two editors simultaneously to compare, and while he was a bit more expensive, the value I got for the money was exponentially higher. I loved working with him, and I would do it again. His feedback was thorough and kind, and he justified some of his remarks well. He finished the project fast and was thorough in his work,

Matt is an excellent developmental editor. He was candid and direct on ways to make my story more marketable. He had excellent incite into the characters and their motivations and made suggestions to bring them more to life. With the story itself, he made great recommendations on how to "amp up" the conflict to make the pages really turn. I appreciate working with Matt and I look forward to wor...

I spent a lot of time evaluating talented professionals for a developmental edit. Ultimately, I chose Matt and am very glad I did. He was happy to work with a first-time author and took an obvious interest in my writing, manuscript (a thriller), and characters. Matt praised what I did well and gently but convincingly showed me where I needed to spend more time. Every one of his suggestions was ...
