Mamta Jha – Editor

I provide back-of-book and embedded indexing services for thoughtful texts in a wide variety of subjects.

Overview

I specialize in back-of-the-book and embedded indexing for textbooks, trade books, scholarly works, and reference materials. I provide embedded indexing in LaTeX, InDesign, and Word.

With over 20 years of experience—including seven years as an in-house indexer and thirteen years as a freelancer—I deliver accurate, professional indexes tailored to the needs of readers. My past projects span scholarly works, trade books, textbooks, medical journals, and reference books.

My subject specialties include Politics and International Relations, Psychology, STM disciplines, and Social Justice. I am meticulous, thorough, and precise, and I take deadlines seriously. I can also accommodate projects on short notice when required.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in life sciences and a master’s degree in management. I successfully completed the ASI training course and received a Certificate of Completion. To further strengthen my expertise, I have taken one-to-one courses with senior indexers and attended every ASI conference since 2012.

I believe strongly in the usability of the index as a tool, knowing that a well-crafted index directly enhances a book’s accessibility and saleability.

Work experience

Self-employed

Mar, 2012 — Present
I launched my freelance indexing business in 2012, and since then I have primarily worked with university presses and independent authors. Freelancing allows me to collaborate on a wide variety of books and engage directly with authors - an aspect of the work that I find especially rewarding. Many of my projects have come through recommendations and referrals from project managers and authors, which I consider a gratifying acknowledgment of the quality and reliability of my work.

Macmillan India

Sep, 2006 — Feb, 2012 (over 5 years)
I worked as Manager – Indexing and Abstracting Services at Macmillan India, where I guided and reviewed the work of the indexing team and trained new joiners. During my tenure, I collaborated with leading publishing houses such as Informa, Pearson, and Bloomsbury on their indexing projects. Additionally, I gained valuable experience working on medical journals, which was a significant takeaway from my time at Macmillan.
