Overview

Hi there,

I know hiring an editor is an investment, and there are lots of factors to consider when making your choice. I hope the below gives you a sense of whether we might be a good creative fit, but please feel free to ask me questions!

Lydia

MY EXPERIENCE:

As Director of Originals at Audible UK, I worked with world-class content partners like Disney, Warner DC, Ubisoft, and The Agatha Christie Estate. My projects include the NYT Bestselling The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman, and the record breaking series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.

As Director of Original Content at Realm I worked on fan-favorites such as Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, as well as a varied list of YA, Romance, Mystery, Thriller, Action, Horror, Historical, and SFF.

As an agent I read thousands of submissions (so I know how to get that elusive “full” request) and sold projects to all of the major publishers.

AM I THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOUR PROJECT?

→ I have edited some of the world's biggest Fantasy and SciFi properties and am a great fit for any SFF subgenre.

→ I love to time travel with Historical -- I've edited stories set in periods ranging from Ancient Rome to the Regency.

→ I'm a confident editor of Romance (especially Romantasy) of any spice level.

→ My mastery of narrative theory and up-to-date market knowledge can help all commercial genres find success.

My experience is broad, but my major interest is fandom. I’ve worked on franchises with intensely passionate followings and love using that experience to help authors create new worlds, plots, and characters with the potential to not only attract readers, but to inspire the enthusiasm of true fans.

My editorial style is thorough, honest, and friendly. I am solution oriented, and will offer creative and clear suggestions for solving problems. I enjoy finessing prose while honoring each author's unique voice. Killer log lines are my speciality, and I have a knack for finding the perfect comp titles. I will leave you with a stronger manuscript, as well as an improved skill set that will serve you for years to come.

MY SERVICES:

→ Editorial Assessments (Big picture review of all the building blocks of a successful novel, and your strengths and weaknesses as a writer, delivered in an actionable editorial report.)

→ Development Edits (For those looking for more detailed feedback in the form of margin comments as well as an editorial report.)

→Line Edits (tracked changes addressing the style and clarity of prose and dialogue.)

→ Submission Packet review (Feedback on any combination of your query, synopsis, and opening.)

→ Coaching (Writers block? In the difficult middle? Struggling with your outline? Want to improve your craft? Calls that provide feedback on your writing and keep you moving forward.)

Please reach out to find out more about working together, or just to discuss Buffy fan theories! I can't wait to hear about your project!

Work experience

Lydia Shamah

Feb, 2024 — Present

As well as offering editorial services for authors, I work with film and TV production companies developing new content, and with audio producers making fiction podcasts. I also train editors at big five publishers with an emphasis on how to create and develop commercially successful projects.

Audible UK

May, 2019 — Nov, 2023 (over 4 years)

I commissioned, script edited, and produced commercial audio fiction in a wide range of genres including Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Horror, Historical, Mystery, Thriller, Action Adventure... In this role I worked with debut writers on original titles and on popular IP such as The Sandman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Assassins Creed.

Realm

May, 2017 — May, 2019 (about 2 years)

As Director of Original Content at Realm I produced and edited serialized fiction co-written by teams of authors. I worked on fan favourites such as Orphan Black: The Next Chapter as part of a varied list including YA, Mystery, Action, Thriller, Horror, Historical, SciFi, Fantasy, Western, and Romance.

Carol Mann Agency

Jun, 2013 — Apr, 2017 (almost 4 years)

In my time at the agency I reviewed thousands of submissions so I know how to keep an agent reading! I represented many successful non-fiction titles such as Big Gal Yoga by Valerie Sagun, and There Is No Good Card For This by Emily McDowell and Kelsey Crowe. Fiction titles included Romantic Suspense Wattpad sensation A.V. Geiger, and Historical Romance by Golden Angel.

Working with Lydia on my line edits for my debut novel was a dream. I reached out to her after having to let my original line editor go & I am so, so glad I did. Her feedback was incredibly thorough, thoughtful, & I am blown away at how she was able to edit my prose so that it was much more clearer & yet my voice was not lost. I feel that I've grown as a writer just in the day that I've had her...

Provided helpful feedback and really got what I was trying to do with the plot as well as understanding how to take it forward. It was clear they cared about making my book the best it could be. Communicating with them was a breeze - they were very friendly, quick to respond and understanding. Their suggestions were amazing. Could sing their praises about every aspect of what they did, just a r...

Wow. Lydia took my story to the next level and helped me unlock so many doors in the short flash fiction I am getting published soon. She was so attentive - even when I was faltering to understand how the story should move and unfold. She respected my work - from beginning to end. She worked with me to pull out the essence of what I'm trying to accomplish. She saw my thinking - and made it so t...

I had a wonderful time collaborating with Lydia! I get lost in my writing (a lot!), and working with Lydia was like handing her a flashlight and a map. She was able to guide me through my insecurities and provided encouraging feedback that made my story stronger. I would definitely recommend working with her and will do so in the future!
