Liz Gassman

Liz Gassman – Editor

A detail-oriented editor with Big 5 experience who specializes in crafting compelling nonfiction narratives and marketable book proposals.

Overview

I am a freelance editor specializing in memoir, pop culture, and prescriptive nonfiction. While working in-house, I've had the privilege of working on acclaimed books like Tiffany Haddish's I Curse You With Joy, Robbie Krieger's Set the Night on Fire, Cara McGoogan’s Blood Farm, which was shortlisted for the Lukas Prize, and the upcoming A Father's Fight by Robbie Parker, a searing account of his trauma after his daughter's death in the Sandy Hook school shooting was turned into a vicious conspiracy theory. In addition to my editing work, I honed my industry knowledge at Little, Brown while assisting in the publications of award-winning books such as Ronan Farrow's Catch and Kill, Clint Smith's How The Word Is Passed, and Rueben Miller’s Halfway Home.

Since going freelance, I've guided writers through all stages of the book process—from fleshing out a proposal vision to polishing a manuscript. Proposals I’ve collaborated on have landed my clients representation with WME, Francis Goldin, and The Gernert company, among others, and have gone on to sell to both independent and Big Five houses.

While I specialize in editing propulsive works of nonfiction and crafting incisive and selling book proposals, I would love to help work with you at any stage of your writing process! From outlining your novel to copyediting the final draft and refining your pitch, I'm eager to assist you in writing and publishing the book of your dreams.

Happy writing!

Working with Liz was incredible! She helped me edit a book proposal for my hybrid memoir/biography of about 100,000 words about a topic that Liz has worked on before. From the very beginning, she explained her process. We met once to go over my goals/vision, and then I sent her my first draft of ...
