Overview
For over 30 years, I've worked in both the book and magazine industries as an editor, copy editor, proofreader, and writer, working closely with authors to take their work to the finish line. As an editor, I've worked with new writers to help guide them through the publishing process, from pitch to press. With veteran big-named authors, I offer the editorial support they need. I see editing as a silent partnership, helping writers realize their vision and their fullest potential before their work goes to press. As a writer, I empathize with how terrifying it is to bequeath writing to an editor. Whether I'm editing or copy editing, I listen carefully to writers' concerns as I work with them, careful never to impose my ideas or undermine a writer's confidence or final vision for their project. I make myself available to talk through ideas and even brainstorm, answer questions and explain my suggestions. I am like quality control for your writing projects to get them ready for publication.

Work experience
Self-employed
Since 1998, I've been a freelance editor and copy editor for books, print magazines, online magazines, and Substacks, both in-house and at home. I am currently offering copy editing and proofreading services for book manuscripts and proposals, galleys, and magazine articles and pitches. I include images below from pieces I've copy edited (New York magazine), and edited (i.e., Tressie McMillan Cottom, Salon, DAME Magazine) for reference, so you can get a sense of my work.
Tressie McMillan Cottom's Thick publishing/Essaying
Brainstormed ideas and writing prompts for essays with the New York Times op-ed columnist and best-selling author Tressie McMillan Cottom. I worked as a concept, line, and copy editor for the author's long-form essays for her Substack newsletter, NY Times op-ed columns, and served as a reader and editor for her two book proposals, which she sold to Random House.
DAME Magazine
As the editor-in-chief of DAME Magazine, a small independent intersectional feminist general features magazine, I assign and edit reported features, op-eds, and personal essays, to new and seasoned writers, some of whom pitch me, some of whom I seek out. I also create the social media copy, and the display copy (headlines and outlines).
Salon
I assigned and edited essays and reported pieces that analyzed pop culture (film, literature, TV, sports, music); wrote headlines and sub-headlines, and selected accompanying art and photos. Wrote reported pieces and essays, interviewed actors and authors about literature, TV, and film. I managed a staff of critics, columnists, and reporters.
New York Magazine
For 11 years, I was on staff as a copy editor, working closely with writers, editors, and fact checkers, from the first draft to final proofs, on long-form features, special packages and issues (9/11 tenth anniversary issue, Reasons to Love NY, e.g.), essays, profiles, listings, etc. I am proficient in the Chicago Manual of Style and Words Into Type. I also wrote features and profiles for the magazine's culture and main features sections, and guest-edited a travel package.
