Katie Bucklein

Katie Bucklein – Editor

As both a Pitch Wars mentor and a freelance editor, I combine a knowledge of the publishing industry with expertise of the writing craft.

Overview

After working as a Pitch Wars mentor and completing my Bachelor's degree in history, I shifted my focus to freelance editing to utilize the nine years of experience I have in the publishing industry. My talents lie with characterization, world-building, dialogue, plot beats, and romance, and I've written across the genres in both YA and Adult. My two most prominent genres are fantasy—and all fantasy's subgenres, but especially fantasy romance, epic fantasy, and contemporary fantasy—and romance, though I've successfully married my history degree with historical fiction. I've helped numerous authors go on to sell their books to the Big 5, as evidenced in my portfolio, and excel with writing and editing query letters. I am also a writer with a literary agent, so I know what works to catch eyes.

I provide developmental editing, editorial assessments, copyediting, proofreading, and query letter review. Developmental edits and editorial assessments result in an in-depth edit letter, detailing macro and micro edits. Copyediting and proofreading result in edits completed via Track Changes. For query letters, I offer two rounds: the first is an edit of what you’ve already written; the second is to fine-tune what you’ve revised. When the client has received their feedback, I suggest they read it once, set it aside for a day or two, and read it again before creating a game plan, after which I welcome them to email with any further questions or requests for advice.

WOW! I can't thank Katie enough for what she did for my story! I kept reading about how helpful an editor can be for new authors and came to Reedsy in the hopes of finding someone who (1) I could afford and (2) would have the knowledge and time to give my very first completed manuscript a detailed lookover! With her helpful insight into story pacing and character development, she was able to su...

Katie was effective and professional throughout the whole process. They caught so many mistakes I didn´t see and offered incredibly helpful suggestions and additions that improved the book. English isn´t my first language and one of my main concerns was having sentences that were too long, as is typical in Spanish books. Katie addressed this and more, and I´m deeply thankful for it.

Katie has proven to be a highly professional, very competent, and imaginative editor. Her review of my novel was extremely thorough and detailed, providing me with a 4,000-plus word analysis that included recommendations on plot, character development, and technical issues in need of correction. She has also been responsive and prompt in replying to my follow-up questions. While I don't intend...

Katie was professional, responsive, and went above and beyond, sharing her experience and expertise. Her love for literature and the writing community shines through. She was patient and more than willing to address questions about the query process and the literary marketplace in general. A real joy to work with.

Katie was great! She finished my dev edit weeks before the scheduled deadline, and her edit letter was so helpful in helping me see my story in a new light.
