Katharine Moore

Katharine Moore – Editor

Book coach and developmental editor specializing in children's, middle-grade, and teen nonfiction, with 10+ years of in-house experience.

Overview

I specialize in children's, middle-grade, and teen nonfiction: I've edited everything from educational workbooks to self-help guides to craft and DIY books. I'm particularly skilled at working with authors who are subject experts but who may not have much of a writing background. With over 10 years of in-house editorial experience, I have expertise in market research and conceptualization, planning and outlining, reworking structure and tone, line editing, and art direction. I pride myself on being both thorough and kind when working with authors, and I enjoy working on both the big picture of a book and the little details. No matter where in the writing process you are, I'd be delighted to help you plan and polish your work!

• Acquired and developed 12 books per year, ranging from children’s picture books to middle-grade and teen workbooks and self-help guides.
• Strengthened Magination’s nonfiction list with middle-grade and teen books in compelling new subject areas, such as climate-change anxiety; initiated a new line of books on psychological science for kids.
• Cultivated strong relationships with authors and agents and handled all contract negotiations.
• Consulted with experts in child psychology to craft books that would engage children, provide opportunities for social-emotional learning, and reflect psychological best practices.

Callisto Media

Sep, 2017 — Feb, 2019 (over 1 year)

• Originated and outlined 16 to 20 new book concepts per year based on a data-driven analysis of market opportunities. Categories included children’s, parenting, crafts, and cookbooks.
• Developed bestselling titles including The Anger Management Workbook for Kids and Human Body Activity Book for Kids, both of which have sold over 100,000 copies and are consistently top sellers on Amazon.
• Managed the editorial process for each book from start to finish: worked closely with authors to develop a manuscript that would engage readers and thrive in the market, collaborated with designers on illustrations and photography that would complement and enhance the book’s content, and oversaw editing as the book moved through production.

Westview Press

Sep, 2015 — Sep, 2017 (almost 2 years)

• Acquired new course texts in international relations and area studies; managed and edited these projects from acquisition through the handoff to production.
• Edited and developed 5–10 new editions of textbooks for the international relations and area studies lists each year; conducted reviews, worked with authors to develop detailed revised edition plans, and ensured that new editions met high editorial standards.
• Worked to build Westview’s reputation among academics by cultivating relationships with potential authors and readers, represented Westview at academic conferences, and conducted research on new branding initiatives.

Katharine has been great to work with! I am a novice writer and she gave me feedback that I could understand and yet still left me flexibility in how I implemented it. I look forward to working with her again on future projects!
