Kate Brauning – Editor

Award-winning editor. YA author: Simon Pulse. Copyeditor: Lerner Publishing. Coach: Breakthrough Writers. Loves YA, MG, and adult fiction

Overview

As an author and an editor, I bring a unique perspective from both sides of the desk to my edits. I will challenge your story on every layer, helping not only to get what's in your head on to the page but also to push the story to a new level. I specialize in making manuscripts emotionally resonant and helping tie all the layers together so that each one amplifies the others, and the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

I've worked with major publishing houses as an acquiring editor, copy editor, and developmental editor, and have taught workshops with RWA, Writers' Digest, the Romantic Times Convention, the Idaho Writers' Guild, YA Thriller Con, and more.

Books I have edited include The 99 Boyfriends of Micah Summers, Kirkus star recipients Island of Exiles by Erica Cameron and Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz, USA Today bestsellers No Kissing Allowed by Melissa West and Knocked-Up Cinderella by Julie Hammerle, and Nebraska Book Award winner The November Girl by Lydia Kang, as well as a Kirkus Indie Book of the Month, 2 Junior Library Guild selections, a Goodreads Best Book of the Month, a Locus Magazine Best Book of 2017, and an A-Grade recipient from Smart Bitches, Trashy Books.

Kate helped me dip my toes into the world of fiction. I am primarily a poet, and asked Kate for a developmental edit on a short story, which I'm now selling as a chapbook at my poetry readings. She helped me identify areas to strengthen the story structure as well as add clarity to character motivations. Kate's work was essential to the development of this project, which has turned out a story ...

Very disappointed. She handed the manuscript one week late, and upon revision, it seems a lot of the revisions were done using a Ctrl+H command without regards for wether they were appropriate or not (like putting a dot in the middle of a sentence multiple times), while many simple mistakes I found later were overviewed. I don't understand being a week late for such a poor result.

Kate was very thorough in her developmental edit of my book. I enjoyed working with her and would highly recommend her to anyone wanting an editor to address plot holes or gaps, check characterization and look at the big-picture of your manuscript.

Kate's work transcends common professionalism. She was very communicative and answered all the questions I had regarding this project. Her notes were very insightful and helped me get a better understanding for what publishers and agents look for. I look forward to working with her again on future collaborations.
