Juliet Wilberforce

Juliet Wilberforce – Editor

Copyeditor for Cambridge University Press. Fascinated by ancient civilisations; keen on medical communication; love children's books.

Overview

It's paramount to be cognisant of writers’ incredibly hard graft over the preceding months, and even years, researching and drafting a book. It's always a pleasure helping authors give their writing a professional copyediting 'tidy-up'. If you are an academic expert needing your text checked over or a creative talent wanting your manuscript polished, please contact me. Authors I've worked with have appreciated my uncritical tone and constructive, 'team effort' approach. Correcting consistency and grammar is a daunting prospect for many authors, who would rather concentrate on writing. I hoover up a lot of the detailed but nevertheless important editorial tasks, while the clock ticks down to the deadline.

I have great copyediting experience from freelancing for Cambridge University Press. If your manuscript needs a deeper level approach I can do substantive editing. I analyse raw material and suggest options for re-working of text, to ensure your readers keep turning pages for more.

I am privileged to work with authors from all over the world, many with an impressive grasp of English despite not being first-language English speakers. If your manuscript needs correcting by a native English speaker, I will 'fine-tune' the writing by checking grammar and spelling, and inject clarity and 'quality-assurance'.

If you are writing for children, I can help ensure your draft is suitable for your target age group and is engaging in storyline, characterisation and plot. I have read many children's books, both picture and chapter books. I volunteered to read with children and was employed for three years in special needs education in a mainstream school, working very much 'at the coal face'. I took children's reading groups and selected books for, and with, children in a library.

I started out working on medical academic journals and society publications. Subsequently I trained and set out as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader in 2017 when my family had grown up. I haven't looked back.

I have a BA (Honours) degree in Latin. I am restoring a Georgian house (very slowly!) with my husband.

Work experience

Self-employed

Jul, 2017 — Present

Currently I copyedit books for Cambridge University Press and Assessment, tackling their classics, ancient history and medical academic and trade titles. When I started out as a freelancer I copyedited social science titles for Routledge/Taylor and Francis via publishing management companies. I also work for non-publisher clients, e.g. on improving the non-native English of books accepted for publication, or line-editing raw manuscripts. An important part of my role is collaborating with authors, in whatever part of the world they may be.
