Overview

I'm an editor with over 19 years' experience in publishing, particularly in the genres of science-fiction, fantasy and horror. I was the commissioning editor for Yoon Ha Lee's critically acclaimed and multiple award nominated Machineries of Empire series, Dave Hutchison's Fractured Europe series, and am the award-winning editor of several horror anthologies, including Magic, House of Fear and End of the Road. To date, I've commissioned and edited hundreds of books.

I started in academic publishing at Taylor & Francis, where I was a production editor overseeing a list of academic journals. After this, I joined Rebellion Publishing Ltd as the Editor-in-Chief for their fiction publishing, commissioning and editing books for the Solaris and Abaddon Books Imprints. During my time there, I worked on literally hundreds of science fiction, fantasy and horror novels and anthologies, several of which went on to win awards. I was also the graphic novels editor for British comic 2000 AD for five years. After a brief stint as a Senior Editor in non-fiction publishing I have gone full-time freelance and returned to my first publishing love: fiction. It's good to be back!

I work closely with the author, seeking to help them to get the best from their story. With my long experience of fiction publishing, I know what makes a story tick and have a good sense of the ever-changing world of publishing markets. I seek to make the process as professional, informed, painless and fun as possible.

Jon was amazing, providing both a light developmental edit and copy editing for my science thriller. Professional, faster than expected, but with extreme attention to detail, Jon provided keen insights into my novel, while also being incredibly fastidious in his copy edits. I would highly recommend him for any project large or small.

Charles Wachter, May 2020

Oliver is definitely a good editor to use, he leaves good tips and is amazing with Communication. This is my first book that I am working on and Oliver helped to make this an amazing experience so far.

It was a pleasure to work with Jon. His feedback was clear, direct and prompt. He highlighted my manuscript's strengths as well as its weaknesses, which was a great encouragement. I got the impression that Jon cares about his clients and wants them to succeed. I would recommend him to other fantasy genre writers.

Sue Rau, April 2020

Brian Wells
Besides being a fantastic editor worthy of his vast experience, Mr. Oliver is also very communicative and mindful of special needs that arise from submission requirements, such as word-count restrictions and intended audience. He is easy and pleasant to work with and, he is always willing to discuss his edits and to suggest alternatives. I honestly can't recommend him more highly.
