Jo Dingley

Jo Dingley – Editor

I'm a Developmental Editor of Literary Fiction. Previously Hachette and Canongate, with 15 years’ trade experience. Based in Scotland.

Overview

I am a Scottish-based Developmental Editor and Publisher with over 15 years industry experience. I was most recently Editorial Director at Sceptre, the literary imprint of Hodder & Stoughton, but made the choice to go freelance in order to spend more time with my two small children.

I was a Bookseller Rising Star in 2021 and UK editor of The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2020.

I love working with authors closely on how they can develop and push themselves to make their work the very best it can be. I specialise in literary and reading group fiction.

Work experience

Sceptre, Hodder & Stoughton

Mar, 2022 — May, 2024 (about 2 years)

At Sceptre I acquired and published both literary fiction and non-fiction. I had the pleasure of working with authors of major international standing, including David Mitchell, Kevin Powers and Fiona McFarlane but also launched the careers of new authors including Jenny Mustard, A P Firdaus (selected by BBC2 Between the Covers) and Polly Atkin (longlisted for the Wainwright Prize 2024 and overall winner of the Lakeland Book Awards 2024).

Canongate Books

Mar, 2010 — Feb, 2022 (almost 12 years)

Notable books I published are: The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste (shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2020), Rootbound by Alice Vincent (longlisted for the Wainwright Prize 2020), Animals by Emma Jane Unsworth (movie adaptation released in 2019), The Valley at The Centre of the World by Malachy Tallack (longlisted for the Ondaatje Prize), The Dark Flood Rises by Margaret Drabble, Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo (shortlisted for the Baileys Prize 2017 and the Wellcome Prize 2018), Salt on Your Tongue by Charlotte Runcie (Radio 4 Book of the Week), Courage Calls to Courage Everywhere by Jeanette Winterson and The Little Snake by A L Kennedy (optioned for film). I also provided structural, conceptual and line edits for many other prize-winning and bestselling authors, including Matt Haig, Michel Faber, Scarlett Thomas, Nick Cave, Carol Birch, Mary Costello and Kevin Barry, among many others.
