Overview
I am an experienced professional indexer, accredited by the UK Society of Indexers, at Fellowship grade, a recognition of excellence in indexing.
I have created indexes for many well-known publishers, including the Hachette group, McGraw Hill, Macmillan, Pearson, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Thames and Hudson, Oneworld, UNESCO, educational institutions, smaller independent publishers and individual authors.
My indexing process involves analysing a text, page by page in detail, selecting concepts, topics and subjects for entries. Relationships between terms are identified and highlighted and alternative search approaches are catered for. Careful editing ensure that a coherent structure is created which focuses on usability, accuracy and consistency, with the needs of the reader kept in mind. My fees are based on Society of Indexers recommended rates.
I have indexed extensively in the education field, working on Keystage and vocational texts, and produce child-friendly indexes to encourage the exploration of topics. Art history is a passion of mine, and in 2018 I created index terms for a Royal Academy of Arts online resource covering 250 years of the Academy Summer Exhibitions - a fascinating project.
From 2013-2021 I oversaw the delivery and assessment for the internationally recognised Society of Indexers training course, and worked to revise the course to cover ebook indexing and raise the professional standard of our qualified members. In 2017 I was awarded the Society's Bernard Levin Award in recognition of my service and achievement in this field.
I look forward to my next indexing project.
