James Kingsland

James Kingsland – Editor

Science writer, editor and copy-editor, formerly at the Guardian newspaper and New Scientist magazine

Overview

With more than 25 years' experience in science journalism and publishing, I'm comfortable working in any field of science or medicine. I have written and sub-edited for science magazines, nursing magazines, engineering magazines, doctors' newspapers and national newspapers.

Most recently, my specialties have been neuroscience and psychology. I'm the author of two popular science books, about the neuroscience of meditation and altered states of consciousness, and have edited or copy-edited books about nutrition, pregnancy and space exploration.

I have worked alongside some of the best writers and editors in journalism, as science production editor at the Guardian newspaper and senior sub-editor at New Scientist magazine. Tight deadlines do not faze me.

James has been completely brilliant. His assessments sent me in exactly the right direction. The later copy edits were detailed and really made a difference to the text I've been staring at for the last two years. Highly recommended, and excellent rates for the quality of work he delivers.

I recommend James highly. He completed the work on time and was a joy to work with. He was also very helpful in areas where I lacked understanding. We agreed on a style manual (Chicago Manual of Style) and that guided his work. I would definitely work with James again.

I've been extremely lucky having James as my editor. Not only he is a very professional editor, he is also a deep thinker who gave me great recommendations and contributed a lot in reshaping several places of my book. As a thoughtful reader he critically analyzed the content and was very instrumental in rephrasing certain parts to make them easier for non-scientific reader. I'm extremely satisf...

I chose James for an editorial assessment of my first book, due to his background working at the New Scientist, for a philosophy book that uses a significant number of scientific studies. Amongst other things, he picked up on how to improve the reader experience by having a more accessible opening paragraph in some chapters, while saying that the starts to other chapters worked fine as they wer...
