Henry Gifford

Henry Gifford – Editor

Highly capable editor of translation, literary fiction, thrillers, and memoirs with experience at prestigious independent publishers.

Overview

I am a freelance editor specializing in literature in translation, literary fiction, and memoirs. I have experience with line editing, copy editing, proofreading, and manuscript evaluations, with a background in publishing and a keen sense of what publishers are looking for. I was formerly an Assistant Editor at New Vessel Press, an independent publisher of literature in translation. At New Vessel I mostly worked on literary fiction like Faysal Khartash's ROUNDABOUT OF DEATH, translated by Max Weiss, as well as political thrillers including Sergei Lebedev's UNTRACEABLE, translated by Antonina W. Bouis, and memoirs like Marina Jarre's I BELONG TO VIENNA, translated by Ann Goldstein.

I also maintain close relationships with clients, both translators and writers, and understand the role an editor ought to play from both sides of the relationship. I aim to make your work the best version of itself, not change it to suit my tastes. I will highlight your work's strongest points and strengthen the rest. Perhaps most importantly, I know how to recognize what doesn't need changing—and know to leave it be!

Henry was fantastic to work with throughout the process. He was prompt with responses and delivered as promised. He was honest in his editing (even when he might not have understood a southern us expression). I can not recommend him enough.
