Evan Griffith

Evan Griffith – Editor

Professional editor, MFA-level writing educator, and award-winning children's book author with 10+ years trade publishing experience

Overview

As a professional editor of 10+ years, a writing MFA faculty member, and an actively-publishing author of children's fiction and nonfiction, I support writers in telling the stories of their heart with confidence, clarity, and joy.

For several years I was a full-time Editor at Workman Publishing in New York City, where I developed fun and engaging nonfiction books, including memoir, self-help, how-to, humor, travel guides, and books about history, science, and the arts. Since 2023, I have served on the faculty of the Writing for Children and Young Adults MFA program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, where I mentor writers working on YA and middle-grade novels, picture books, and children's nonfiction. I am also the award-winning author of several middle-grade novels and picture books published by major houses like Harper, Penguin Random House, and Simon & Schuster.

When you work with me, you can expect warm, thorough feedback that celebrates what's working and offers specific suggestions for improvement. I love digging into character development; narrative structure; voice; point-of-view; theme; and worldbuilding. While I specialize in children's literature and nonfiction for all ages, I bring a keen editorial eye to projects of diverse genres (and I'm an avid reader of fantasy, sci fi, and mysteries!). For me, storytelling is both a journey inward—to better understand ourselves, our experiences, and our passions—and a journey outward—to spark curiosity, understanding, and delight for our readers. I look forward to helping you offer readers your very best!

Editorial Testimonials:

"I came to Evan when I stalled on my unruly middle-grade manuscript. Through his thoughtful questions and nuanced approach to storytelling, Evan helped me progress. Without Evan’s generosity, compassion, and sharp editorial vision, I’d still be stuck reworking chapter one."—Sara Bates

"Working with Evan on the first draft of my middle-grade novel helped me clarify what I needed to do to get it into shape for submission to agents. His detailed letter and annotated notes throughout were very thoughtful. I left the experience feeling energized, organized, and ready to edit my draft."—Sarah O'Holla

"I really enjoyed working with Evan. He's skilled at giving both big-picture feedback and detailed line-by-line edits, and he makes insightful suggestions that elevate my work without altering my unique voice."—Laura Moss

I mentor several graduate students each semester, responding to their work (YA and middle-grade novels; picture books; poetry; children's nonfiction) with highly individualized editorial letters offering macro- and micro-level craft, style, and clarity suggestions, as well as annotations and line edits on their manuscripts. I also lecture on writing craft and lead writing workshops.
