Overview
Hello! My name is Nicole and I am a seasoned freelance editor, having worked on over 150 projects, spanning novels, poetry collections, philosophy projects, and multimedia anthologies. As a Brown University graduate with degrees in English and Philosophy, my goal as an editor is to work personally and diligently with you to figure out exactly what your project needs to bring it to perfection.
I have been editing friends' essays and poems since my high school days as a poet at the Duke Young Writers' Camp. During my time at Brown University, I translated that experience into a career of editing and copyediting short-form narrative nonfiction and journalism at The Brown Daily Herald and Post- Magazine. As a senior at Brown, I developed a syllabus for a new class titled "Philosophy of Sex" and subsequently served as a Teaching Assistant for the class. Due in large part to that work, I am devoted to accurate and healthy depictions of sex, relationships, philosophy, and ethics in fiction, poetry, and non-fiction alike. In the summer of 2018, I worked at Delacorte Press at Penguin Random House - a fully female-staffed imprint publishing Young Adult and Middle Grade titles - and honed my skills for editing and assessing full-length novels.
Why work with me? I believe strongly in meeting every manuscript where it's at. Due to my background in poetry, where the rules are often fluid and adaptable, I have developed an editorial strategy that focuses first and foremost on understanding the rules of your writing so that I can refine it according to your style. Communication is key for me, so not a question will be left unanswered! My specialties include Contemporary Fiction, Literary Fiction, and Philosophical Fiction & Non-Fiction, but I am happy to work on anything that comes from the heart.
All of the basics aside, I just adore books and editing! In my free time, I am mostly a lover of lyrical writing and postmodern literature, but I am an avid reader of all genres and find a well-executed story to be one of life's greatest pleasures. My passions outside of literature are music, baseball, theatrical set-building, film, mathematics, and exploring nature, so if your work concerns any of these topics, I may just be the editor for you!
