Overview

I'm an interior book designer with experience working for several trade publishing houses. I have designed interiors for authors such as Veronica Roth, Paul Theroux, Howard Norman, & Ursula Le Guin. My specialities are science fiction, suspense, and memoir, though I'm game to design and typeset almost any narrative book. I'm also comfortable placing run-in art and handling basic photo editing. I have 6 years experience with book design. Prior to beginning work as a designer, I worked in an editorial department for four and a half years.

My passion for books, however, is lifelong. I’ve been writing stories since childhood and still work on my own fiction, with my first YA novel due out in summer 2023. I have my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. I’d like to think this drive to be a writer in addition to a book designer is what makes me well-suited to design your book: because I get it. Your book is your baby. You want it to read like the book you always dreamed of. I read everything I design, and so am able to capture a book’s unique personality, bringing life to your pages.

Testimonials

"My experience working with Emily far exceeded my expectations. She showed me utmost respect, as well as for my writing, which I’ve come to find is a rare quality in book publishing. . . . Emily is a true professional whose creative gift for book design turned my manuscript into a beautiful novel. She was a pleasure to work with, kept me updated every step of the way, and always included my vision in the design process. I would highly recommend Emily for your book design project. I’m glad I did." -Sound Rounds, romance novelist

Freelance Book Designer

Self-employed
June, 2022 – Present (10 months)

Starting in June 2022, I decided to step away from trade publishing and pursue the freedom of scheduling and choice of projects that working solely as a freelancer designer affords. I design covers and interiors for my clients, creating print-ready PDFs and reflowable ePubs.

Designer

HarperCollins Publishers
May, 2021 – June, 2022 (about 1 year)

I designed beautiful book interiors for authors such as Veronica Roth, Ursula Le Guin, Paul Theroux, Ian O’Connor, Howard Norman, and Derek Miller.

Designer

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
October, 2017 – May, 2021 (over 3 years)

I designed and typeset interiors for adult general interest, YA, and lifestyle titles.

Assistant Editor / Editorial Associate

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
May, 2013 – October, 2017 (over 4 years)

I worked in the reference, nature, and field guides editorial department, working my way from editorial assistant to Assistant Editor over the course of 4.5 years. I worked on dictionaries, the Peterson Field Guide series, and select narrative nonfiction nature titles.

Freddy Jansson
Emily was amazing and her work greatly exceeded expectations! She was patient and supportive, in particular considering that I am a first time author and she helped me navigate the confusing swamp that is manuscript design. Would recommend her warmly to anyone needing interior design or cover preparation.

William Sterling
Emily was such a pleasure to work with. She's professional and talented, and was willing to work with me and help even when I wasn't sure how to put to words the way I envisioned my book interior. But she hit the nail right on the head and delivered beautiful work. Would absolutely recommend!

Kat Mitropoulos
Emily was such an amazing person to work with! This whole process was very overwhelming for me but she was so helpful along the way. She thoroughly explained the process, and for anyone who isn't used to font choices or design layouts, she helps you to communicate exactly what you need to her so she can make the best changes for your book or e-pub! I highly recommend her!

This is my second time working with Emily, and she has once again ensured that I have a remarkable (and highly marketable) final product.
